Stop Meeting Madness!!! Meeting Ground Rules
    Provided by AAOE
Now that we have looked at a few important organizational dynamics that hinder effective governance in medical groups (lack of adherence to group decisions, conflict avoidance, and getting stuck in the "Storming" stage of group development), let's start looking at solutions.

    ALPS Committee Update
    Provided by AAOE
The AAOE ALPS (AAOE Leaders in Practice Success) Committee is very excited for the AAOE Annual Conference! The committee has been diligently planning two events for the conference, a breakfast and a reception. Both events are a time for leadership and new members to meet and mingle. In their free time, the ALPS committee is reaching out to new members and welcoming them to AAOE to answer any questions the new member may have. The ALPS committee prepares for a busy year ahead in 2015.

Contact Kelsey Koralewski for more information on becoming an ALPS mentor or mentee at kkoralewski@aaoe.net or 317-472-2545 or apply here.

What's Your Favorite Item on Your Desk?
    Provided by AAOE
This is a framed saying that my mother gave me when I got my bachelors in Accounting in 1993. Being from a family of 10 in the Deep South and raised in what may best be phrased as a "financially challenged" situation, gave me a true appreciation for hard work and perseverance. I am the number 8 child but the first to graduate from college...my two younger sibs went on to college and graduate as well. One of my older sisters went back to school and finished after I did.

This item holds a lot of sentimental value to me coming from her. She worked very hard to raise the 4 remaining ones at home as a single mom and knew how to stretch a dollar to its fullest. Now that I have a family of my own (practically empty‐nesters) I can fully appreciate her sacrifices not only financially supporting us, but also making the time to support us in what we wanted to do (sports, academics, activities). Mom couldn't always be at our functions, but she always encouraged me to never quit.

I would bet she paid less than $5 for this, but to me, it's worth a million and I wouldn't get rid of it for the world.

    Medical Scribes
    Provided by AAOE
Medical Scribing has emerged in response to the introduction of the electronic medical record (EMR) into clinical practice. Medical practices, hospitals, and emergency departments hire scribes to mitigate the inevitable slowdown created by providers who are not adept at typing or navigating the computer screens. Providers who use scribes in their practices report improved productivity, clinical documentation, completion of medical records and provider satisfaction. Patient satisfaction has also been reported to have improved, and thought to be due to the provider’s increased attention to the patient, rather than the computer screen and keyboard. Physicians, PAs and NPs are providers authorized to use scribes to document their patient encounters.

    KEEPING UP WITH CONFERENCE

As Seen on the Listserv: Reminiscing by Dale Reigle
    Provided by AAOE
In May of 1996 I joined Rocky Mountain Orthopaedic Associates as its CEO. At that point in time I had worked in healthcare over 20 years. I had held various medical management positions at a wide range of facilities both public and private. I felt comfortable coming into this new position ... until I actually arrived. The world of private practice medicine, especially orthopaedics, was like following Arne Saknussemm into the center of the earth. Everything was new and different. I was a neophyte again. It was exciting and terrifying at the same time.

The early bird gets the worm ... but who really cares about worms? Except another worm. And I am sure even for another worm it is just a casual thing and not true love. They don't even have a real brain (which was the same reason I told my step daughter that some of her early boyfriends were not really true love). But it seems I have digressed too far off topic even for an off topic email.

Ten Things Every Orthopedic Practice Should Be Doing in the New Healthcare Environment
    Fulcrum Strategies
The past few years have been increasingly difficult for healthcare providers. One of the many reasons is because physicians have focused almost exclusively on the delivery of care while the insurance companies have focused on the delivery of profits. Simply put, physicians are getting out-managed, and it’s time that we finally put an end to it. What follows is an important list of ten things that every orthopedic practice should be doing in the new healthcare environment. Written by a former managed care insider, these crucial points can help practices to better position themselves for success in 2015 and beyond.

Efforts to instill empathy among doctors are paying dividends
    MedPage Today
Clinical empathy was once dismissively known as "good bedside manner" and traditionally regarded as far less important than technical acumen. But a spate of studies in the past decade has found that it is no mere frill. Increasingly, empathy is considered essential to establishing trust, the foundation of a good doctor-patient relationship. Studies have linked empathy to greater patient satisfaction, better outcomes, decreased physician burnout, and a lower risk of malpractice suits and errors.

Can healthcare effectively measure patient engagement?
    Health IT Analytics
Patient engagement is considered so important to the larger goals of healthcare reform that it is included as one of the three branches of the Triple Aim. While the EHR Incentive Programs measure patient engagement by portal log-ins and data downloads, the real meaning of the term is much deeper and broader than that.

Telemedicine making sense for more doctors and patients
    Medical Xpress
Increasingly, healthcare providers are turning to telehealth — physician services provided over a video or telephone connection — to save dollars and deliver care to remote areas or to patients who may have difficulty getting to medical facilities. The American Medical Association endorsed the use of remote monitoring and delivery of services at its annual meeting in June 2014. At the same time, the organization noted that the market for telemedicine is expected to grow from approximately $1 billion in 2016 to $6 billion by 2020.

Why every American should care about the ICD-10 delay
    Healthcare IT News
To the average person, ICD-10 might sound like the cataloging number one uses to locate a piece of furniture in an IKEA warehouse. And with each passing delay, it is positioned more and more as a government versus healthcare provider debate. While these organizations and facilities are certainly impacted, we, as patients, are as well — only most don't realize it.
