    LEAK OF THE WEEK

    Be a Conference Mentor
    AAOE
Have you been to the annual conference more than once? Do you look forward to the networking as much as you do the education? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then we need you to be a conference mentor. It doesn't take much to be a mentor. You don't have to attend a bunch of meetings. AAOE staff will pair you up with someone who is attending for the first time. All you have to do is reach out to them and extend the hand of friendship. Attend the opening reception with them and introduce them to some of your fellow colleagues or have lunch or coffee with them one day. It can sometimes be overwhelming to attend the conference for the first time. All it takes is one friendly word to help make a new attendee feel like family! To be a conference mentor, simply answer "yes" to the question during your conference registration. If you have already registered and you would like to be a mentor, please call AAOE at 800-247-9699 or email info@aaoe.net.

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

ICD-10 conversion could mean data, financial losses
    Modern Healthcare
The coming switch to ICD-10 this fall could spell data and financial losses that could "evaporate the operating margin of a practice," even in a medical specialty with a less code-intensive transition, according to a team of researchers from the University of Illinois at Chicago. The changeover also could mean provider problems with issues ranging from short-term staffing and supply-chain management to multi-year quality improvement reporting, researchers said.

US doctors push back on latest Republican move on Obamacare
    Thomas Reuters Foundation
U.S. doctors' biggest lobby group said legislation intended to avoid a major Medicare pay cut for doctors had become a victim of partisan politics after Republicans tied it to their efforts to undermine Obamacare. The American Medical Association, the biggest lobby group for U.S. doctors, called on lawmakers in the Senate and House of Representatives to resume the bipartisanship that early this year produced legislation for a permanent "doc fix" that would avoid once and for all a cut in traditional Medicare payments enshrined in a 1997 budget law.

Obamacare enrollment grows, but still behind target
    CNBC
Affordable Care Act enrollment has accelerated in most states over the past few weeks, but the numbers are still way behind targets. As of March 1, 14.8 percent of the eligible population — or 4.24 million people—had chosen a plan, according to data from the Kaiser Family Foundation. The Congressional Budget Office had projected more than 5.7 million enrollments by then, or 19.9 percent of the eligible population of 28.6 million, as determined by Kaiser.

Why healthcare franchising is entering a boom time
    Entrepreneur via Yahoo News
Of all the goods and services offered by franchises — giant pretzels, pest control, elliptical trainers — the most important is probably the one that goes least noticed: healthcare. In fact, many patients have visited a healthcare franchise without even realizing it. With the rising cost of healthcare and the millions of people expected to seek treatment under the Affordable Care Act, physicians, hospital systems and enterprising businesspeople have been searching for faster, more efficient and more affordable ways to deliver quality service. What they've found is that the franchise model can dispense routine medical care as efficiently as it delivers other products and services.

Florida Supreme Court voids caps on medical malpractice lawsuits
    Reuters va Yahoo News
The Florida Supreme Court struck down a state law that placed a $1 million limit on the amount of money people can be awarded in wrongful death cases caused by medical malpractice. The 5-2 ruling declared as unconstitutional a key provision of a 2003 malpractice law signed by then-Governor Jeb Bush and enacted by a Republican-controlled state legislature.

Rating sites becoming an important tool for patients
    By Pamela Lewis Dolan
Despite physicians' dislike of online rating sites, a survey finds patients are increasingly relying on them when shopping for a new doctor. A survey conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan Medical School found that when choosing a doctor, physician rating sites weren't ranked as high as other factors such as word of mouth from family and friends or whether a physician accepts the patient's insurance. But there is evidence the rating sites have become an important tool. And use of them is likely to continue growing.

Sebelius: Premiums will rise in 2015
    The Hill
Premiums will rise in 2015 under ObamaCare, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said. "I think premiums are likely to go up, but go up at a smaller pace than what we've seen since 2010," Sebelius said in response to a question from Rep. Erik Paulsen, R-Minn. "The increases are far less significant than what they were prior to the Affordable Care Act," she said during testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee.
