    AROUND THE INDUSTRY

CMS on Obamacare's health insurance exchanges: 'Let's just make sure it's not a 3rd world experience'
    Forbes
Obamacare's reorganization of the U.S. health care system is slated to go on-line on January 1, 2014. That's when the law's key provisions go into effect: its individual mandate; its rules requiring higher premiums for young people; and its expansion of insurance coverage through Medicaid and the law's subsidized private insurance exchanges. Increasingly, officials in the Obama administration are worried that the rollout of the exchanges will be chaotic, given the law's complexity and unrealistic deadlines.

    Malpractice risks for hospitalists
    Medscape Today
The number of hospitalists has skyrocketed over the past 10 years, and as their numbers grow, so do the number of lawsuits filed against these physicians. Liability insurers have only recently separated the evaluation of hospitalists' risk from their claims experience with general internists. Up until the past few years, hospitalists, who are typically trained as internists, were insured (covered) at the same rate and with the same premiums as primary care physicians in private practice.

The public doesn't understand health law
    The Hill
Three years after it became law, Democrats have made almost no progress explaining the Affordable Care Act to the public. The latest tracking poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation shows dramatic confusion over what is and isn't included in the law, as well as deep uncertainty over its effects.

Survey: More doctors plan to retire early
    Medscape Today
Most physicians have a pessimistic outlook on the future of medicine, citing eroding autonomy and falling income, a survey of more than 600 doctors found. Six in 10 physicians (62 percent) said it is likely many of their colleagues will retire earlier than planned in the next 1 to 3 years, a survey from Deloitte Center for Health Solutions found. That perception is uniform across age, gender, and specialty, it said.

Physician turnover rate reaches high as stock prices, home sales rise
    News-Medical.Net
As stock prices and home sales rise, physician turnover reaches the highest rate since the first year data was collected in 2005, and exceeds pre-recession levels. Medical groups reported an average turnover rate of 6.8 percent in 2012, according to the 8th annual Physician Retention Survey from Cejka Search and the American Medical Group Association. The survey also reported turnover of 11.5 percent among advanced practice clinicians, which includes physician assistants and nurse practitioners. This is essentially unchanged from 2011, the first year APC data was collected.

States urged to expand Medicaid with private insurance
    The New York Times
The White House is encouraging skeptical state officials to expand Medicaid by subsidizing the purchase of private insurance for low-income people, even though that approach might be somewhat more expensive, federal and state officials say. Ohio and Arkansas are negotiating with the Obama administration over plans to use federal Medicaid money to pay premiums for commercial insurance that will be sold to the public in regulated markets known as insurance exchanges.

Integrating EHR with medical education for improved care
    EHR Intelligence
Imagine going to school, but never knowing if the valuable time you spent in the classroom was having an impact on the outside world. Unfortunately, this happens every day in the medical community. Physicians and other healthcare providers are mandated to complete anywhere from 12 to 50 hours of continuing medical education yearly. The problem is that few clinicians know whether those hours of education have a meaningful impact on real-world patient outcomes.
