Criminal background checks provide patchwork protection against rogue doctors
American Medical News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Driving under the influence, tax evasion, fraud, battery and sexual assault. These are some of the charges that have been revealed in criminal background checks of physicians by medical boards around the country. Often the doctors in question try to hide their criminal past, but that has become increasingly difficult. During the last 15 years, concerns over public safety have led to many state medical boards being given authority to investigate as a condition of licensure whether doctors have a criminal history. But how that authority is used varies from state to state. More

Medicare budget debate comes down to who does trimming
Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
This year's debate over the future of Medicare comes down to who wields the knife. Both political parties are proposing to cut the $500 billion-a-year healthcare program for the elderly. They disagree as to how. Republicans want to rely on the marketplace, saying competition can be harnessed to drive down costs. Democrats say a panel of experts, created in the Obama administration's 2010 healthcare overhaul, should decide how to wring savings from the program. More

Regardless of Supreme Court ruling, reform under way
HealthLeaders Media    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Will health leaders revamp their organizations if the constitutionality of the individual mandate portion, or even if the entire Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, are rejected by the Supreme Court? Will they, perhaps, cancel expansion plans needed to take care of 30 million newly insured, or withdraw resources from improving patient experience scores? No. Not at all, several said, after hearing portions of the arguments. Whatever the Supreme Court decides will have little effect on current reform trajectories already under way. More

A recent survey found that 22 percent of male physicians and 44 percent of female physicians worked less than full time in 2011, up from 7 percent of men and 29 percent of women from the 2005 survey. Two of the fastest-growing physician demographics — men near the end of their careers and women at the beginning or middle — are the most likely to demand part-time or flexible work schedules, according to experts in physician recruitment. Nurse shortage to re-emerge
Fierce Healthcare    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Although the nursing shortage has temporarily ended, healthcare providers need to utilize existing nurses as efficiently as possible, as the shortage will re-emerge as the U.S. economy improves, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study found that the number of full-time nurses increased by about 386,000 from 2005 to 2010. But while the economy picks up, the mostly married, female nursing workforce will quit, go back to part-time or retire — restoring the need for more nurses. More
