    AAOE LEADERSHIP

Committee Member Spotlight: Chris M. Dugger
    AAOE
Practice name: New England Orthopedic Surgeons, Inc.
    City/state: Springfield, Mass.
Group size: 14 Surgeon, 16 PA
    Hobby: Guitar
Favorite quote: "We often forgive those we find tedious, but never those who find us so."
Favorite book: "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" by John LeCarre
Favorite movie: Very tough, I love so many movies, but if I have to pick one, "Goodfellas"
    Favorite music: Jazz and Classical
Other information: Blessed with a wonderful spouse of 30 years and two terrific children.

    Note about his committee involvement:
I have served the Advocacy Committee by leading a Sub-Committee on Federal Regulations. We watch for new rules being posted that allow for formal comment. If they are relevant to the membership, we work as a team to draft comments, always with an eye to give regulators insight into the operational impacts of proposed rules.

Getting involved in the Advocacy Committee has been a great experience for me, broadening my exposure to a terrific group of peers who are working to make a difference with AAOE. I encourage everyone to consider getting involved in some way beyond just being an AAOE member. It’s so easy to get isolated focusing the day to day challenges of running your practice, and participating in any of the Committees will give you some insight into the larger national issues facing our Specialty.

More hospitals say they plan to buy physician practices in 2013
    D Magazine
Fifty-two percent of hospitals plan to acquire physician practices in 2013, compared with 44 percent that made such purchases in 2012, according to a survey by Jackson Healthcare, a healthcare staffing company. The nationwide survey of 118 hospital administrators found that opportunity, rather than strategy, was the overwhelming reason hospitals are acquiring physician practices. Seventy percent of acquisitions in 2012 began with physicians approaching the hospital to sell their practices.

House plan would ease Medicare into pay-for-performance
    Medscape Today
Physician reimbursement in Medicare would gradually shift to a hybrid of fee-for-service and pay-for-performance with an option for unspecified "alternative payment models" under a plan that leading House Republicans unveiled yesterday. The plan, not yet in the form of legislation, gives provider organizations such as medical societies the job of developing ways to measure physician performance.

Missouri House passes medical provider liability limit
    Insureance Journal
The Missouri House has approved legislation seeking to reinstate a cap on some damages in medical malpractice lawsuits that the state Supreme Court struck down in 2012. Doctors say the cap helps control malpractice insurance premiums and warned that unlimited economic damages for issues such as pain and suffering would harm the availability and affordability of health care in Missouri.

5 components of developing a medical staff plan
    Becker's Hospital Review
Developing and implementing a successful medical staff plan is no easy feat. Physician turnover is at an all-time high, and 36 percent of physician groups expect the physician retirement rate to increase this year, according to a physician retention survey by Cejka Search and the American Medical Group Association. Additionally, the growing national physician shortage increases the competition for physicians, making implementing a medical staff plan more difficult.

Will health care reform raise insurance premiums?
    NBCNews.com
A big part of the pitch for President Barack Obama's healthcare reform was that it would make healthcare insurance more affordable–heck, it was even in the name of the bill. But more than three years after the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, top Republicans say it's making premiums more expensive. A recent report by the Society of Actuaries showed healthcare costs per person were expected to go up an average of $1,200 a year. The report estimates costs will rise in all but five states–and peak in states like Ohio and Wisconsin, where they could jump 80 percent or more.
