Accreditation Roundtable: Understanding the MIPAA Requirements for Advanced Imaging
    AAOE
From changes in accreditation standards (who can operate the machines, how long does accreditation take, what is the cost, is tesla or CT slice an issue, what do we need to measure) to what impact will this have on my practice (tied to reimbursement — both Medicare and commercial payors, updates on in-office imaging and STARK, hospital owned practices and accreditation) to the future of MRI and CT in the outpatient market (reimbursement trends, appropriateness criteria for ordering, correlation tracking). Our esteemed panel has their fingers on the pulse in the imaging world, and, will gladly share with the AAOE members their knowledge and predictions.

    AAOE Committee Updates
    AAOE
AAOE's growth is due, in part, to the many members who volunteer on our councils and committees. From planning your education, to recruiting authors for the newsletter, to monitoring the AAOE Listserv, these volunteers take the time out of their busy lives to make sure that AAOE is as good as it can be for the membership. Starting this month, you will get an update on one committee each month so that you can see what they are working hard at to add as much value to your membership as possible. Chris Greenman, Chair of the AAOE Technology Committee provides our first update.

Study: Meaningful use email criteria challenging for specialists
    By Pamela Lewis Dolan
As the meaningful use incentive program moves into its second stage, there have been concerns among physicians over their ability to meet the patient engagement requirements. Satisfying the Stage 2 criteria will rely not only on physicians adopting the right technology, but also on their patients' willingness to use it. A recent study finds specialists may have a particularly hard time getting patients to sign up for their patient portals and exchange secure emails with them.

Report projects healthcare costs to dip slightly
    The Washington Post
A new government report says the Affordable Care Act's health insurance subsidies will cost a little less than previously thought. The Congressional Budget Office predicts that health insurance subsidies under so-called Obamacare will total a little more than $1 trillion over the next 10 years, instead of almost $1.2 trillion.

Latest meaningful use certification round recognizes competent EHR vendors
    Healthcare IT News
The first quarter of 2014 is over and yet we are still witnessing EHR system vendors asking the government for more time, or to lessen the certification demands, for Stage 2 of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' meaningful use of EHRs program. What's even more frustrating is that these vendors are asking their own practice customers for patience, while they figure out how to fix their own software or find the money to do so. Developers were given 16 months from the publish date of certification rules and yet many claim to still need more time to figure out how to modify their product.

Exchanges enroll 7.5 million, but how many have signed up directly with insurers?
    Modern Healthcare
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said recently that 7.5 million people have signed up for coverage through the state and federal exchanges since Oct. 1. This latest tally still fails to reflect how many consumers have yet to pay—and the potentially large number who sought coverage outside the exchanges. The new figure from HHS is well beyond the Congressional Budget Office's original projection of 7 million enrollments and is expected to continue to grow as individuals who started applications before the March 31 deadline complete the enrollment process.

Can you afford to delay your ICD-10 implementation?
    EHRIntelligence
There have been many developments and changes to the healthcare system, ranging from the Affordable Care Act to meaningful use. One of the many changes is the transition to the ICD-10 Classification of Diseases. Currently the United States is behind in the transition to this system. One reason being the use of multiple payors in healthcare delivery.

Medicare millionaires emerge in data on doctor payments
    Bloomberg Businessweek
Medicare paid almost 4,000 doctors and medical providers more than $1 million apiece in 2012, including seven who received more than $10 million. The listing, gleaned from 880,000 providers paid by Medicare, was released this morning. The data, the first look at physician payments by the agency in more than 30 years, showed that most spending fell to a small group of doctors, with less than 3 percent taking in about 28 percent of the $64 billion paid out to individual providers.

In surprise move, CMS announces Medicare Advantage pay increase
    By Pamela Lewis Dolan
After proposing in February a 1.9 percent cut in reimbursement to insurers in the Medicare Advantage program, Medicare made a surprise announcement and said there would, instead, be a 0.4 percent increase. This is the second year Medicare has reversed proposed cuts despite a provision in the Affordable Care Act to bring pay parity between traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage. The decision came as a surprise, especially to insurance industry leaders who were pushing for rates to remain unchanged.

Tax preparers' new role: Health coverage advisers
    The New York Times
Iris I. Burnell, an adviser at Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, has prepared scores of returns in the last few months, as she does every year ahead of the April 15 filing deadline. But many of her consultations this year have also included educating clients about the tax implications of the Affordable Care Act. "Many people don’t realize that it's the law, and you have to have insurance," said Ms. Burnell, the manager of a busy storefront tax preparation office just a few blocks from the Capitol. "They still think there's a way to worm out of it. When I ask if they have insurance, they hem and haw. They are in a wait-and-see mode."
