The Patient Portal — You Built It, But Will They Come?
By Stacey Christensen, Marketing Director, POS Professional Office Services, Inc.®
The healthcare world is all abuzz about patient engagement. In simple terms, practices and providers are required to engage more with patients to improve overall health outcomes.

And to reinforce this need for improved provider/patient engagement is Meaningful Use Stage 2. MU Stage 2 requires practices to provide patients the opportunity to view their health information online.

Increasing Practice Security through Cloud Services Adoption
    Provided by AAOE
On Monday, April 27 and Tuesday, April 28, two entrepreneurial technology experts are coming together to discuss "Increasing Practice Security through Cloud Services Adoption." This topic was so well received that you now have multiple days to attend the session. Both Mitch Greenwald and Joe Granneman are first-time speakers for the AAOE conference and they are more than excited to meet you at the event! The speakers have their own reputable backgrounds, which you can read about in the Preliminary Program, but they've also worked on projects together. As a result, this presentation will have a dynamic like no other and will be as much of a learning experience for you as an opportunity to ask questions that will benefit your practice specifically. Hope to see you there!

Obama signs SGR repeal bill as medical groups react to CMS warning
    The Associated Press via FierceHealthcare
President Barack Obama made it official and permanently repealed the sustainable growth rate formula by signing a bill passed by the Senate, The Associated Press reports. Obama, who last month pledged support for the "doc fix" legislation, praised the bipartisan negotiations by Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., that led to the agreement. The legislation, he said, will help improve physicians' quality of care "because it starts encouraging payments based on quality, not the number of tests that are provided or the number of procedures that are applied but whether or not people actually start feeling better ... it encourages us to continue to make the system better without denying service."

    Keeping physician compensation affordable
    Hospitals & Health Networks
Health systems do not necessarily expect employed physician practices to operate in the black, but they are operating so deeply in the red that many systems are becoming financially anemic. Further contributing to the fiscal drain is the fact that physician compensation rates are increasing while reimbursement rates are declining. These trends threaten the financial solvency of health care organizations and, as a result, hospital boards and leadership teams are tending more critically to the financial performance of their physician enterprises.

Ten Things Every Orthopedic Practice Should Be Doing in the New Healthcare Environment
    Fulcrum Strategies
The past few years have been increasingly difficult for healthcare providers. One of the many reasons is because physicians have focused almost exclusively on the delivery of care while the insurance companies have focused on the delivery of profits. Simply put, physicians are getting out-managed, and it’s time that we finally put an end to it. What follows is an important list of ten things that every orthopedic practice should be doing in the new healthcare environment. Written by a former managed care insider, these crucial points can help practices to better position themselves for success in 2015 and beyond.

EMRs can be costly in malpractice suits
    Healthcare IT News
The numbers drew audible gasps from the audience: $1.7 million here, $7.5 million there. These were damages hospitals had to pay plaintiffs as a result of malpractice cases whose verdicts hinged directly on the documentation — or lack thereof — in electronic medical records.

CMS draft rule would ease EHR program demands
    Modern Healthcare
The CMS intends to give more flexibility to hospitals, office-based physicians and other healthcare providers to meet federal targets for the meaningful use of electronic health records, according to a proposed rule the agency issued. Chief among the changes in the 210-page draft rule is a proposal to standardize the 2015 reporting period for the EHR incentive-payment program to 90 consecutive days of achieving meaningful-use criteria.

    ICD-10: What's different this time?
    Healthcare IT News
The healthcare industry is now closer than it's ever been to an ICD-10 compliance deadline — if only in calendar days. Whereas the previous pair of delays each came approximately seven months ahead of the former respective deadlines, today we are barely more than 5 months away from the ominous First of October. But other than that is anything actually different this time?

    3 technology trends transforming healthcare
    Forbes
The healthcare industry has always been changing, but what is different about our industry now is that the pace of change has sped up. Keeping up with those changes is almost impossible. More so when day-to-day activity prevents leaders from strategic planning the next three to five year direction of their organization.
