Baucus warns of 'huge train wreck' enacting ObamaCare provisions
    The Hill
Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., said he fears a "train wreck" as the Obama administration implements its signature healthcare law. Baucus, the chairman of the chamber's powerful Finance Committee and a key architect of the healthcare reform law, said he fears people do not understand how the law will work.

Study: Hospitals profit from surgical errors
    The New York Times
Hospitals make money from their own mistakes because insurers pay them for the longer stays and extra care that patients need to treat surgical complications that could have been prevented, a new study finds. Changing the payment system, to stop rewarding poor care, may help to bring down surgical complication rates, the researchers say. If the system does not change, hospitals have little incentive to improve: in fact, some will wind up losing money if they take better care of patients.

GOP lawmakers call for reboot of meaningful use program
    iHealthBeat
Recently, six Republican senators released a 28-page white paper — titled, "REBOOT: Re-examining the Strategies Needed to Successfully Adopt Health IT" — outlining their concerns about current federal health IT policy, FierceEMR reports. The white paper accompanied a letter that the six lawmakers sent to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. The letter requested information about the agency's progress in promoting electronic health record adoption through the meaningful use program.

Wait for ACA price tags could be months
Kaiser Health News via MedPage Today
Recently, Vermont became the first state to provide a glimpse of how expensive individual health insurance might be under the Affordable Care Act. Proposed rates there, while of questionable relevance to the rest of the country because of the state's unusual insurance market, showed little change from current prices and reassured health law supporters fearing headlines about "sticker shock." But rate disclosure elsewhere may take a while.

Get paid in full: 4 experts on maximizing ASC patient payment collections
    Becker's ASC Review
Just like a new car depreciates immediately after driving off the lot, so does your cash flow when you allow patients to leave without making a payment. In fact, if you don't collect co-pays and deductibles at the time of service, the chance of collection drops 16 percent.

The financial impact of ICD-10: How do you prepare for the unknown?
    FierceHealthcareFinance
Of all the changes coming to healthcare in the coming years, conversion to the ICD-10 coding system might be the one with the biggest air of mystery. It's near impossible to tell exactly how it will impact revenue. No one's really sure how much training will be enough. Will systems and partners be ready? Will payers? Inquiring CFOs would like to know.

Fiscal commission leaders introduce a modified budget plan
The Associated Press via The Washington Post
The chairmen of President Barack Obama's 2010 fiscal commission are wading back into Washington's budget wars with a revised, somewhat milder plan to rein in intractable federal deficits. The plan released by former Sen. Alan Simpson, R-Wyo., and former Clinton White House chief of staff Erskine Bowles would lop more than $5 trillion from deficits over the upcoming decade when combined with the deficit-cutting steps enacted in fits and starts since his 2010 proposal.
