CMS intends to permanently boost state Medicaid enrollment funding
    Healthcare DIVE
"We believe that most states have not had sufficient time to complete the total system replacement for … eligibility functionality," CMS said in a proposed rule. "Without ongoing enhanced federal funding, state Medicaid eligibility and enrollment systems are likely to become out of date and would not be able to coordinate with, and further the purposes of, the overall mechanized claims processing and information retrieval systems."

Doctors applaud SGR bill's malpractice protection
    Medscape (free login required)
Medical groups are applauding the overwhelming vote in the U.S. Senate to prohibit plaintiffs from using a physician's performance on federal quality measures in a medical malpractice lawsuit. The provision included in the legislation to repeal the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula would stop plaintiffs from using a doctor's quality improvement performance as the sole basis for a medical liability lawsuit or to prove negligence.

How to talk to patients about advanced directives
    By Joan Spitrey
April 16 has been designated as National Healthcare Decision Day. This movement came out of the passion and frustration of founder Nathan Kottkamp. As a member of several hospital ethics committees, he was repeatedly challenged with trying to interpret healthcare decisions for people who had no advanced directives. Anyone working in a hospital — especially a critical care area — can certainly relate. Although most healthcare providers would agree that all patients should have an advanced directive, they often shy away from having the conversation with their patients.

    Are Medicare and Medicaid sustainable?
    U.S. News & World Report
It has been nearly half a century since President Lyndon B. Johnson signed Medicare and Medicaid into law, and while both continue to drive contentious debate among lawmakers, there is one point of agreement: The method of spending on these programs needs to change. In a summit at Sidney Harman Hall in Washington, District of Columbia, former chiefs of government agencies responsible for the programs reflected on the law's passage and its future.

Doctors: We need to delay ICD-10 again
    By Scott E. Rupp
This whole ICD-10 delay thing continues to bear some fruit, and there's still quite a bit of steam behind the effort. With rumors swirling that congressional leaders are finally ready to take action this year, many providers may not be sharing the joy, nor are they looking to celebrate. Healthcare Informatics recently commissioned a survey through QuantiaMD, and the results are not (ICD-10) friendly. Doctors are not backing down in their distaste for the mandate.

Ten Things Every Orthopedic Practice Should Be Doing in the New Healthcare Environment
    Fulcrum Strategies
The past few years have been increasingly difficult for healthcare providers. One of the many reasons is because physicians have focused almost exclusively on the delivery of care while the insurance companies have focused on the delivery of profits. Simply put, physicians are getting out-managed, and it’s time that we finally put an end to it. What follows is an important list of ten things that every orthopedic practice should be doing in the new healthcare environment. Written by a former managed care insider, these crucial points can help practices to better position themselves for success in 2015 and beyond.

3 reasons to outsource your revenue cycle management
    HIT Consultant
The last few years have been challenging for medical groups across the country. Mounting regulatory burdens, escalating costs and declining reimbursements have put a substantial strain on physicians and their staff. Rising administrative burdens only add to the pressure, consuming precious time that healthcare professionals would rather spend with patients. So should your practice outsource its revenue cycle management?

Two-midnight rule decision expected in August after CMS gathers feedback
    Healthcare Finance News
According to a just-released inpatient payment proposal for 2016, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services plans to gather more feedback on the "two-midnight rule" before changing the controversial measure of inpatient vs. outpatient stays. "We note that hospitals and physicians continue to voice their concern with parts of the 2-midnight rule ... Therefore, we are considering this feedback carefully," the CMS stated in the report.

4 ways healthcare leaders can improve communication
    FierceHealthcare
Effective communication is no easy feat, but it's more important than ever for healthcare leaders to clearly chart a way forward for their organizations as there is so much uncertainty and resistance in the industry, according to Hospital & Health Networks Daily. To do this, the article states, leaders must concentrate on their vision and strategy. A useful vision statement must explain how the healthcare organization will be different, and a successful strategy actually involves the articulation of "five to seven high-level driving strategies" that identify the most important steps the organization must take to realize the vision, according to the article.
