Favorite movie: "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly" (Clint Eastwood)
More about Paul: I just completed my Doctorate in Healthcare Administration. My research was conducted on the correlation between employee perceptions of teamwork and empowerment and ratings of patient satisfaction. Over the past year I have become active within the Advocacy Council and serve as an assistant editor for the legislative update monthly newsletter. I have a strong interest in health policy and its influence on operations and healthcare systems. The implementation of the CapWiz link within the AAOE website proves exciting and very informational. CapWiz permits quick information access and delivery for the AAOE membership on legislative and regulatory initiatives. I enjoy being involved with the Advocacy Council, the Legislative newsletter, and CapWiz. The AAOE proves an excellent organization and resource for those in orthopedic administration.

    AROUND THE INDUSTRY

Physician earnings: Income is up, morale is split
    Medscape Today
Physician income overall is on the rise again in almost every specialty, reversing a decline in compensation during the past several years. Eight specialties earned a mean of at least $300,000 last year, and primary care physicians also posted gains. Doctors aren't ready to break out the champagne just yet, though. Frustration with medical practice is also on the rise, and physicians are making changes in their practice by adding ancillary services, moving toward employment, and scrutinizing their payers, as doctors keep an eye toward the bottom line.

With health law looming, one large insurer wants a 25 percent premium hike
    The Washington Post
Maryland's biggest health insurer proposed raising premiums for individual policies by an average of 25 percent next year, saying that President Barack Obama's health law would require it to accept even the sickest applicants, driving up costs. The CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield plan must be approved by the state, and officials immediately indicated that there would be close scrutiny of the double-digit boost.
