AAOE Listserv hot topic
Cynthia Everlith, BSHA, CPC, C.M.A., AAOE Elections Council Chair    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Who would guess in a million years that sandals would be a "hot topic" in orthopaedics? Well on April 9, Alan Leybold from the Orthopaedic & Spine Center asked the question of what policy our offices had for business office/nonclinical staff regarding footwear. For two days this became the "hot topic" on the Listserv. There were 31 entries off the Listserv in response to Leybold's question. Do you have a question to pose to your peers? If so, come join us on the Listserv; we are happy to help. More

Could You Be April's Fool?

Writing an effective proposal letter
Susan E. Charkin, Healthcents    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In Part I, we provided guidance on the kinds of data you need to gather prior to negotiating reimbursement rates with third-party payers. Now it is time to put this information to work by preparing a simple but substantive proposal letter that is sent to the payers' contracts manager that introduces the practice, the request for a rate increase and, most importantly, the reasons for the proposed increase. New take on malpractice policy that calls for disclosure, apology and often a settlement
Boston Globe    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Orthopaedic surgeons are among the medical specialists most likely to be named in a malpractice case. At most institutions, hospitals and doctors put up walls when dealing with medical errors in anticipation of a possible lawsuit. The University of Michigan created a system a decade ago aimed at changing that. Staff members were encouraged to disclose and discuss errors, offer patients an apology and move toward a settlement when appropriate. More

Prices for doctor services lag behind inflation
American Medical News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Physicians have long felt that the cost of running a practice is growing more quickly than payment received per service. New government data indicate that this is more than a feeling. The Consumer Price Index for all items went up 0.3 percent in March and 2.7 percent in the previous 12 months, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Prices paid for physician care, which includes the amount from an insurer as well as the patient portion for a single service, went up 0.2 percent for the month and 1.3 percent during the past year. Heavy backpacks can spell chronic back pain for children
The New York Times (blog)    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Heavy backpacks don't just sap children of energy that might be better used doing schoolwork or playing sports. Lugging them can also lead to chronic back pain, accidents and possibly lifelong orthopaedic damage. Among the risks described by Dr. Pierre D'Hemecourt, a sports medicine specialist at Children's Hospital Boston, are stress fractures in the back, inflammation of growth cartilage, back and neck strain, and nerve damage in the neck and shoulders. As Supreme Court mulls healthcare, rumors fly
Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The U.S. Supreme Court recently wrapped up the last oral arguments of its current term. Now comes the nationwide angst of waiting — as long as two months — for decisions, particularly the one that will resolve the most high-stakes and closely watched case of the year: the challenge to the healthcare law. The collective impatience is fueling a mini-industry of rumors, wagers and speculation not seen since the Bush v. Gore case of 2000, when a presidential election hung in the balance. More
