    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Future implications of the increase in middle-aged hip replacements
    By Dorothy L. Tengler
More than 300,000 total hip replacements are performed in the U.S. each year, and that number is expected to increase to 500,000 by the year 2030. The number of THRs nearly doubled among middle-aged patients from 2002-2011, primarily because of the increasing middle-aged U.S. population. This continued growth in hip replacement surgeries in patients age 45 to 64, an increase in revision surgeries for this population as they age, and a nearly 30 percent decline in the number of surgeons who perform THRs could all have significant implications for future healthcare costs.

Electronic record errors growing issue in lawsuits
    Politico
Medical errors that can be traced to the automation of the U.S. health care system are increasingly an issue in medical malpractice lawsuits. Some of the doctors, attorneys and health IT experts involved in the litigation fear that safety and data integrity problems could undercut the benefits of electronic health records unless HHS and Congress address them aggressively.

Measuring the Success of Physical and Hand Therapy Programs: Ten Factors That Will Make or Break a Practice
    Ancillary Care Strategies
As healthcare reform and related healthcare delivery changes continue to reshape the landscape, managers and therapists at physical and occupational therapy practices are looking for opportunities to enhance patient outcomes and reverse declining revenue trends. While focusing on financial benchmarking is certainly appropriate in economically challenging times, all too often therapy managers measure success according to the number of patients scheduled or the dollar amount billed. However, this is only part of a much larger picture.

High hopes, unfulfilled promise: Healthcare groups look beyond portals
    By Christina Thielst
The patient portal is sometimes envisioned by healthcare leaders as the one-stop shop for patient-facing technologies. However, the patient portals of most electronic health record vendors today were not designed to accommodate all of the business and functional requirements needed for population health, meeting meaningful use requirements and truly engaging patients to improve outcomes and build loyalty. The healthcare delivery system currently being transformed is moving us much closer toward longitudinal health and a virtual care team approach.

New medical innovation bill draft boosts NIH funding
    Modern Healthcare
A new draft of House legislation that creates significant new regulatory leeway for drug and device companies now includes more funding for the National Institutes of Health. The revised draft represents a compromise with Democrats who withdrew support for the initial bill. Leaders of the House Energy & Commerce Committee are circulating a new "discussion draft" of the 21st Century Cures bill that would raise NIH funding to $31.8 billion in fiscal 2016 and to $34.85 billion in fiscal 2018. Congress appropriated $30.3 billion for the NIH in fiscal 2015, and President Barack Obama requested $31.3 billion for fiscal 2016.
