    The Listserv, My Silent Obsession
    Provided by AAOE
About eight months ago I relented and finally had the "Listserv" sent and loaded. This is a milestone for me since I am so anti-social media that I do not even have a Face Book page (Gasp! Horrors). I know for some of you out there you could not even imagine a day without Face Book, Twitter, or some other social media site, but for me it would seem like just another chore to get through. I have now realized now all social media is created equal! When it comes to the "listserv" I am a silent admirer (creeper).

    Secret Ballots
    Provided by AAOE
When the members of a medical group meet (at either Shareholders or Board meetings) they typically deal with issues that require a decision. Unfortunately, voting doesn't work very well in many medical groups for the following reasons:
    1. Some group members feel the idea of actually voting is too "formal."
    2. Some groups think they have consensus because no one speaks up (or only a few speak up and the thought is the rest are willing to go along) — these groups are fooling themselves because when people don’t speak up it typically means they disagree. In addition — if you think you have consensus, why not vote to make sure you do?
    3. Physicians tend to be conflict avoiders. Sometimes discussions go on and on because people don’t want to raise their hands to vote and possibly enter into conflict with those that don’t agree with them. This can make meetings last much longer than they need to.

Posting with Caution: The Do's and Don'ts of Social Media and HIPAA Compliance
    Provided by AAOE
Social Media can be an extremely powerful tool for communicating general healthcare information to the public, creating professional connections, and sharing experiences. However, sharing too much information on social media platforms can have devastating effects on both healthcare organizations and employees if patient-specific information is shared. With over 800 million people on social networks and professional blogs, it is not surprising that HIPAA violations are on the rise and are raising major concerns among medical practices.

Measuring the Success of Physical and Hand Therapy Programs: Ten Factors That Will Make or Break a Practice
    Ancillary Care Strategies
As healthcare reform and related healthcare delivery changes continue to reshape the landscape, managers and therapists at physical and occupational therapy practices are looking for opportunities to enhance patient outcomes and reverse declining revenue trends. While focusing on financial benchmarking is certainly appropriate in economically challenging times, all too often therapy managers measure success according to the number of patients scheduled or the dollar amount billed. However, this is only part of a much larger picture.

Healthcare execs: Telemedicine a high priority
    Health IT Outcomes
Telemedicine is a high priority for healthcare executives, according to a survey released by REACH Health. The first annual telemedicine survey discovered that 60 percent of respondents listed telemedicine as a high priority in 2015. Fierce Health IT reports 223 health professionals answered the survey. "Our first annual telemedicine industry survey exposed a variety of interesting findings, some anticipated and many that are surprising," said Steve McGraw, President and CEO of REACH Health in a press release. "One interesting result that emerged: the degree of focus of the telemedicine program manager had a stronger correlation with success than did executive support or adequacy of funding."

    PwC urges healthcare billing overhaul
    Healthcare IT News
The U.S. healthcare industry's billing and payment system is a horse-and-buggy in a world contemplating driverless cars, a new report from PwC asserts. Consumers are becoming increasingly frustrated by the system, which still largely relies on paper and telephone calls for billing and payment. The industry needs to transform the way it does business, creating a more transparent, seamless, convenient way to bill and collect money from its customers, according to "Money matters: Billing and payment for a New Health Economy," a new report from PwC's Health Research Institute.

What's inside the new bill to kill ICD-10?
    Healthcare IT News
Republican Texas Rep. Ted Poe resurrected the Cutting Costly Codes Act, and issued a press release to match, thereby sparking the usual suspects into advocacy for ICD-10 and calls for Congress not to advance the proposed legislation. The original version, the Cutting Costly Codes Act of 2013, has been dormant since the now-retired Sen. Tom Coburn, M.D., R-Oklahoma, introduced it in the Senate two years ago and Poe did the same in the House of Representatives — but neither went anywhere.

Stage 3 rule seeks to simplify, streamline meaningful use program
    Health Data Management
As the final expected stage of the meaningful use program, a lot is riding on the Stage 3 proposed rule released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Consequently, according to Elisabeth Myers, policy and outreach leader for the CMS Center for Clinical Standards and Quality, Stage 3 must serve as the "platform for the program over the long term."

Data-driven and value-based decision making is here to stay, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has been one of the drivers of this change in healthcare. CEO Power Panel poll finds broad support for value-based pay
    Modern Healthcare
More than three-quarters of a representative sample of the nation's top healthcare leadership back the ongoing shift toward value-based payment systems, which reward providers for what they achieve rather than what they do. Yet only 20 percent are willing to do away completely with the industry's still dominant fee-for-service reimbursement model, according to the first quarterly poll of Modern Healthcare's CEO Power Panel.

Obamacare program generates 'substantial' Medicare savings
    CNBC
An Obamacare program designed to hold down Medicare costs and improve patient outcomes generated more than $384 million in savings in its first two years of operation, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell said. The savings realized from participants in Pioneer Accountable Care Organizations — groups of medical providers that coordinate patient care in return for lump-sum Medicare payments — represents about $300 per Medicare beneficiary per year during 2012 and 2013, Burwell said, citing an independent evaluation report.

Why healthcare must adopt 'frugal innovation'
    FierceHealthFinance
The need for innovation is a constant refrain in the modern healthcare landscape, but for the most part, that means added expenditures. To avoid this paradox, hospitals should opt for the principle of "frugal innovation," according to Becker's Hospital Review. The idea of frugal innovation is often invoked with regard to economies in emerging countries such as India and China, according to the article. In short, it means that a shortage or lack of resources calls for finding new ways to work with what you have.
