Loyalty Survey in Your Inbox This Thursday
    AAOE
We know you have been "surveyed" to death recently; Benchmarking... conference... but this is the quintessential survey that allows your association — AAOE — to move forward. Please help us with your ideas and comments because the board and all of the leadership will be looking specifically to this survey to plot our future course. And to sweeten the pot, $100 gift cards will be awarded to five lucky survey participants! That alone should make it worth your while!

So be on the lookout for the Loyalty Survey link to hit your inbox this Thursday, May 16. It will come from AAOE Resources and the link is specific to you. The survey will only be open for two weeks; deadline is Friday, May 31. Thank you for participating!

An end to medical billing secrecy?
    TIME
Our hospital bill is about to get a thorough examination. Acting on the suggestion of her top data crunchers at the department's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius released an enormous data file that reveals the list — or "chargemaster" — prices of all hospitals across the country for the 100 most common inpatient treatment services in 2011. It then compares those prices with what Medicare actually paid hospitals for the same treatments — which was typically a fraction of the chargemaster prices.

Hospitals in underserved areas taking different roads to recruit, retain physicians
    Modern Healthcare
The doctor shortage in rural America is widespread and projected to get worse. Medicaid expansion and insurance exchanges are expected to provide coverage to about 30 million Americans — but many in rural and underserved communities may have to drive hundreds of miles for care if it isn't available locally.

Bending the cost curve in healthcare the right way — Through better, more person-centered care
    The Brookings Institution
The United States spends about 17 percent of GDP annually on health care, a figure that is projected to grow substantially in the years ahead, despite the recent slowdown in health care spending growth. Rising costs mean insurance coverage keeps getting more difficult to afford. Those rising costs, plus the aging demographics of the nation, account for most of the spending side of our nation's long-term fiscal challenges at both the federal and state level.

Meaningful use might be a struggle, but it's working for patients
    EHRIntelligence
In a keynote presentation to the Rhode Island chapter of the American College of Physicians, Peter Basch, M.D., FACP, echoed the words of National Coordinator Farzad Mostashari and told an audience of mostly paper-bound doctors that the key to successful EHR adoption was to "forget meaningful use." With dissatisfaction with EHRs on the rise, Basch advised physicians to put aside the all-consuming thought of quality measures and checkmarks and instead look for the patient-centric benefit, like improved communication and a more comprehensive, informed exam.

Hospitals and doctors should be required to carry medical malpractice insurance
    Chicago Tribune
Corporations, hospitals and insurance companies have fought for more than two decades to chip away at Americans' right to enter a courtroom and seek damages for medical negligence. The most publicized of these efforts has taken the form of capping the damages that patients can collect. Now there's another effort to limit medical negligence claims. It has the effect of preventing an injured patient from filing a lawsuit at all.
