Annual Conference Speaker Recap: Timothy Baghurst
    Provided by AAOE
This was my second AAOE Annual Conference. As an academic, sometimes I'm a little out of my depth in the general "clinical" conversations, but attendees are welcoming and friendly. At both conferences I've learned something that I have been able to bring back to my own research and teaching, even though I am not an orthopedics practice executive. There's always something for everyone. One key thing I learned this year is how underused academic institutions are by orthopedic clinics, which is something I hope to present and address next year. We should be collaborating so much more!

    LEADERSHIP QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Measuring the Success of Physical and Hand Therapy Programs: Ten Factors That Will Make or Break a Practice
    Ancillary Care Strategies
As healthcare reform and related healthcare delivery changes continue to reshape the landscape, managers and therapists at physical and occupational therapy practices are looking for opportunities to enhance patient outcomes and reverse declining revenue trends. While focusing on financial benchmarking is certainly appropriate in economically challenging times, all too often therapy managers measure success according to the number of patients scheduled or the dollar amount billed. However, this is only part of a much larger picture.

New bill aims for ICD-10 'transition' period
    Healthcare IT News
One thing about ICD-10 is becoming crystal clear: The compliance deadline is not going to arrive without Congressional resistance. Tennessee Republican Rep. Diane Black — a former nurse, according to her website — added a new wrinkle to the discourse by introducing a House bill this week that would essentially institute an ICD-10 transition period. The text for H.R. 2247 is not yet available on Congress.Gov, which posts proposed legislation a couple days after it gets introduced, but the entry for it states Black's intention.

Tailoring telehealth for your business: Evaluating customer needs
    By Karen R. Thomas
Recent pressures for healthcare providers to both reduce hospital readmission rates and find convenient, affordable care solutions for patients, clients and employees are causing many businesses to turn to telehealth. However, as your company evaluates incorporating a telehealth program into your business model, an important aspect to consider is the regular healthcare needs of your current customers, who are the end users of any telehealth practices you might choose to employ.

Medical scribes increasingly in demand as providers switch to EHRs
    Marketplace via iHealthBeat
Healthcare providers are increasingly hiring medical scribes, in large part because of the growing adoption of electronic health record systems, Marketplace reports. The increasing use of EHRs, spurred in part by the meaningful use program, has increased demand for medical scribes. Under the 2009 economic stimulus package, providers who demonstrate meaningful use of certified EHRs can qualify for Medicaid and Medicare incentive payments.

Examination of nondisclosure agreements in medical malpractice settlements
    Medical Xpress
A review of medical malpractice claim files at an academic medical center found that while most settlements included nondisclosure clauses there was little standardization or consistency in their application, according to article published online by JAMA Internal Medicine. Transparency is a core principle in efforts to improve the safety and quality of health care, according to background information in the study.

Infographic: Physicians becoming more proficient with EHRs
    MedCity News
Physicians are not only becoming more proficient with EHRs, they are using their systems for more than just reference. That's the conclusion of a new Accenture survey of more than 2,600 doctors in Australia, Brazil, England, Norway, Singapore and the U.S. Interoperability is growing as well, albeit slowly. In 2015, for the first time, a majority of U.S. physicians surveyed by Accenture (51 percent) said they "routinely" access patient data from outside their organizations, up just slightly from 45 percent in 2012.

Is penalty phase under meaningful use requirements fair?
    EHRIntelligence
Ever since the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act was passed, the majority of healthcare providers have been focused on implementing EHR systems and health IT tools as well as meeting meaningful use requirements under the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs. More recently, Stage 2 Meaningful Use requirements have been modified in a proposed ruling by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and various stakeholders have been welcomed to submit comment on the proposal.

Are Medicare quality data getting easier to report?
    Medscape
Any time the federal government makes things easier rather than harder for physicians is cause for celebration. That's what the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has attempted to do with the quality data that physicians submit on their treatment of Medicare patients. Until now, these data have been reported for three separate CMS initiatives: the physician quality reporting system, the meaningful use electronic health records incentive program, and the value-based modifier program.
