    Obamacare subsidies may be wrong
The Washington Post via The Hill
The government may be handing out too much or not enough money in healthcare subsidies to more than 1 million people, according to a report by The Washington Post. Citing internal documents and people familiar with the matter, the newspaper said that people who listed different incomes on their insurance applications and IRS documents could be getting the wrong amount of subsidies.

Medicine's top earners are not the MDs
    The New York Times
Though the recent release of Medicare's physician payments cast a spotlight on the millions of dollars paid to some specialists, there is a startling secret behind America's healthcare hierarchy: Physicians, the most highly trained members in the industry's work force, are on average right in the middle of the compensation pack. That is because the biggest bucks are currently earned not through the delivery of care, but from overseeing the business of medicine.

Why technology gaps within physician practices are harmful

One of the great disconnects within the world of healthcare is between then technology on the frontend (and all the administrative responsibilities associated therein) and the use of state-of the-art equipment for patient care on the backend.

Cash-only practices: 8 issues to consider
    Medscape
With rising costs and the problem of Medicare reimbursement still unresolved, many doctors have given at least a fleeting thought to switching to a concierge or direct primary care practice. However, many doctors who are contemplating a switch are understandably confused by what they read in the media or learn from other doctors. Those who have successfully made the transition to either form of practice say that they can better focus on patient care and can more accurately predict practice revenue.

    Cloud-based EHRs: Sky's the limit
    InformationWeek
Cloud-based electronic health records are gaining popularity, especially among small and midsized practices without large internal IT departments. IT staffing is an issue for many healthcare organizations. It's challenging to find someone — never mind an entire team — adept at keeping up with regulatory and compliance issues, security, and other requirements while simultaneously meeting day-to-day business needs. Placing that onus on a better equipped, healthcare-focused partner removes a financial and personnel problem, allowing providers to focus on their practices, many healthcare executives say.

California voters to consider raising 4-decade-old cap on medical malpractice awards
    Reuters
California in November will vote on whether to raise a four-decade-old cap on medical malpractice awards to $1.1 million, from $250,000, officials said, likely ensuring a bitter and costly fight between lawyers backing the measure and doctors who oppose it. Representatives of patients have tried for at least 20 years to persuade the state to raise the limit on pain-and-suffering awards, which was set in the 1970s and is not indexed to inflation. Opponents say a higher cap will raise healthcare costs and choke off access to care.

New payment models could motivate providers to cut wasteful services
    Modern Healthcare
The overuse of pricey medical technology and medication presents a complex challenge for policymakers, hospitals and doctors trying to reduce costs. But the payoff could be substantial, and early results of experiments by Medicare and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts suggest new payment models may be the motivation providers need to tackle the daunting task.

Behind the white coats: Looking at the lifestyles of today's physicians
    By Dorothy L. Tengler
When we visit our physicians, we usually don't think about the commitment they made to be able to treat us — four years of medical school, three to seven years of residency, another few years of fellowship. Most likely, physicians have spent seven to 10 years of their lives preparing to practice medicine. But that across-the-board time commitment doesn't make all physicians the same. In fact, a national survey of 125,000 practicing physicians revealed intriguing differences from finances and career plans to personal lifestyles.
