The Federal Communications Commission announced plans to set aside a chunk of spectrum for connecting wireless medical devices to allow for more convenient and cost-effective health monitoring. The allocation of spectrum for so-called Medical Body Area Networks is part of FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski's push to free up unused spectrum and will be up for a vote at the FCC's next meeting. More

    Spinal cord injuries: The uphill push for a cure

    Rick Hansen, Canadian Paralympian and an activist for people with spinal cord injuries, believes that a major breakthrough in treatment will come within 25 years. But to get there it's going to be uphill all the way, he says, which is why the Rick Hansen Foundation has thrown its weight behind the Spinal Cord Registry. The registry is the creation of spinal cord researcher and surgeon Dr. Marcel Dvorak. "He's a brilliant researcher who had the courage to step forward and look for solutions and led a group to pilot this registry," Hansen said. More

    Study: Insurers to lose $1 trillion if health law struck down

    Nearly one-tenth of the insurance industry's total revenue through 2020 is at stake in the Supreme Court's decision on healthcare reform, a new study by Bloomberg Government says. That figure equals about $1 trillion, or about one-half percent of the projected U.S. gross domestic product over eight years, the report said. More

    The Obama administration is forging ahead with healthcare reforms, announcing a Nov. 16 deadline for state governments to submit proposals showing how they intend to operate health insurance exchanges in 2014. The Department for Health and Human Services released a detailed blueprint of the legal and operational requirements states must meet in their proposals if they expect to win federal approval to begin operating regulated insurance markets by Jan. 1, 2014. More
