Pain relief for next April 15: 4 tax-saving ideas you can do now
By David B. Mandell, JD, MBA, and Carole Foos, CPA
It has only been about a month since April 15, so the "sting" of taxes may be fresh — as AAOE members, your practice and physician owners are surely in the top marginal federal income tax brackets. This means, after the new tax increases for 2013 — between income, capital gains, Medicare, self-employment and other taxes — orthopaedic practice owners may spend between 45 to 55 percent of your working hours laboring for the IRS and their state. Given these sobering facts, the purpose of this article is to show you four ways to potentially save taxes and possibly motivate you to investigate these planning concepts now, before the end of the year approaches, when it is too late.

How effective physician on-boarding can improve long-term retention
    Becker's Hospital Review
Losing a physician is painful — and costly — for hospitals and health systems. The cost of replacing a physician can exceed $250,000, according to various estimates. While it is nearly impossible to retain every physician, hospitals and health systems can improve their retention rates through a strong physician on-boarding and navigation program.

Study: Medical malpractice payouts not driving up health costs
    Insurance Journal
Efforts to lower healthcare costs in the United States have focused at times on demands to reform the medical malpractice system, with some researchers asserting that large, headline-grabbing and "frivolous" payouts are among the heaviest drains on healthcare resources. But a review of malpractice claims by Johns Hopkins researchers suggests such assertions are wrong.
