Measuring the Success of Physical and Hand Therapy Programs: Ten Factors That Will Make or Break a Practice
    Ancillary Care Strategies
As healthcare reform and related healthcare delivery changes continue to reshape the landscape, managers and therapists at physical and occupational therapy practices are looking for opportunities to enhance patient outcomes and reverse declining revenue trends. While focusing on financial benchmarking is certainly appropriate in economically challenging times, all too often therapy managers measure success according to the number of patients scheduled or the dollar amount billed. However, this is only part of a much larger picture.

What will EHRs look like in 2020?
    Healthcare IT News
In an article published online in JAMIA, the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, an AMIA task force takes on the thorny issues associated with the use of electronic medical record systems and offers recommendations for improvement. "Health information technology is a key part of enhancing health and health care, and empowering patients to be first-order participants in their care," said Douglas B. Fridsma, MD, president and CEO of AMIA, in a statement. "As part of this report, we listened to our members who work closely with EHRs to understand the current challenges. We think these recommendations will improve the value that EHRs will provide to patients, and set the stage for more significant benefit in the future."

Medical malpractice: How EHRs are changing the game
    FierceEMR
We're familiar with the multitude of laws that dictate when and how to adopt and use electronic health records. There are 2,000 statutes and regulations related to electronic health information, according to Tara Ramanathan, a public health analyst with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who spoke on a webinar sponsored by the American Bar Association Health Law Section. But now we've begun to focus more on EHRs in the other legal venue: the courtroom.

Errors after ICD-10 compliance deadline affect reimbursement
    EHRIntelligence
The ICD-10 compliance deadline is right around the corner and providers will need to be ready to transition to the new coding set by October in order to receive sufficient reimbursements for medical care services from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. In preparation for the ICD-10 transition deadline, providers are still struggling with a variety of challenges in moving from ICD-9 coding to the extensive list of diagnostic codes.

New Medicare ACO rules near release
    Modern Healthcare
The CMS is expected to issue final regulations soon that could significantly affect whether hospitals and doctors remain willing to participate in Medicare's accountable care program. The Medicare Shared Savings Program for accountable care organizations provides incentives for hospitals and doctors to manage the medical cost and quality for a patient group. The new regulations could change the size of the incentives, how Medicare calculates ACO savings and which patients the hospitals and doctors are responsible for.

GAO calls data used to determine physician pay potentially flawed
    Modern Healthcare
Federal investigators say the current process to review and recommend how Medicare pays doctors leaves it susceptible to inaccurate reporting and conflicts of interests. A report released by the Government Accountability Office found "weaknesses" in the survey data used by the American Medical Association/Specialty Society Relative Value Scale Update Committee, also known as RUC.

    Senators press for more interoperability
    By Scott E. Rupp
National Coordinator for Health IT Karen DeSalvo recently told senators that health IT is "foundational" to President Barack Obama's Precision Medicine initiative and discussed ways to improve data sharing. In February, Obama asked Congress for $215 million in funding for a personalized medicine initiative that centers around the creation of a massive database containing the genetic data of at least 1 million volunteer participants. Sen. Lamar Alexander says the current state of EHRs frustrates providers and could inhibit such research.

Why doctors are frustrated with digital healthcare
    Forbes
A large-scale survey of U.S. doctors conducted by Decision Resources Group tells us that doctors are using digital tools and willing to receive data feeds from their customers, but they are quite frustrated by poor usability of digital healthcare tools and difficulty getting measurable results. The "meaningful use" incentives created by the ACA have caused most doctors to use electronic health records. And, doctors are aware of the large amount of clinically relevant data that digital wearable devices can produce, and they are increasingly willing to engage with it, notwithstanding concerns about liability and accuracy.

Curbing medical errors with the cloud
    Healthcare IT News
Medical errors. The term is frightful to everyone involved in healthcare: not just the patients, but the doctors, staff, and administrators as well. A July 2014 Senate hearing on patient safety revealed that medical errors were the third most prominent cause of death in the United States, directly behind heart disease and cancer. Erin McCann of Healthcare IT News reports that these medical errors cost the nation a colossal $1 trillion each year. 400,000 Americans die annually due to these preventable mistakes.
