MAKING HEADLINES AT AAOE THIS WEEK

    Tough Issues? Parliamentary Procedures
    Provided by AAOE
There are situations when medical groups need to be very formal when dealing with issues. Sometimes a group has severe intra-group conflict. Sometimes the group is split nearly down the middle on an issue and can't seem to make a key decision. Other times group meetings are so large that you must use a more formal decision-making process.

Role Modeling Health and Fitness to Clients and Staff
    Provided by AAOE
We're all familiar with the adage "practice what you preach," but do we do it in the health professions? There is plenty of evidence to suggest that modeling health as a health professional has many benefits. Your physical appearance can positively or negatively impact many aspects of your relationship with your clients and staff. In one study, for example, a physical education teacher taught the same class to two different groups of students. However, in one class he wore a fat suit while teaching. Those students in the "fat suit" group were found to have learned less, thought that the teacher was less knowledgeable, liked him less, and were less likely to exercise afterwards. These results are quite impactful; literally, the students were less likely to learn and believe the content of the lesson just by what the teacher looked like!

Physician quality pay not paying off
    Modern Healthcare
While offering physicians bonuses for hitting quality benchmarks is popular, the incentive programs may not be worth the money. Linking financial rewards to cost-effective management of patient care or reducing adverse outcomes has not produced the desired results, recent studies show. When it comes to physician pay, some experts are asking if healthcare organizations are moving in the wrong direction.

How the Affordable Care Act is affecting hospital hiring and recruiting
    Healthcare Global
Demand for health care services is predicted to swell in the next 10 years, driven by an aging baby boomer population and increased access to health care for all Americans through the Affordable Care Act. However, the supply of health care providers will simultaneously decrease, with shortages of qualified physicians and nurses predicted in the next 10 years. This gap between supply and demand will create intense hiring challenges for health care employers and recruiters. This new era will drive innovation in recruiting, with employers exploiting new technologies to find qualified job candidates. Digital marketing efforts will steadily increase, as will the use of social media.

Providers want CMS to slow down EHR superhighway
    Modern Healthcare
Hospitals are imploring CMS to slow down its pace as it works to have providers adopt and meaningfully use electronic health records. In March, the agency released a proposed rule for what it called Stage 3 of getting providers to make the digital change. The proposed rule would require nearly all providers to report on a full calendar-year cycle beginning in 2017 and would require electronic reporting of clinical quality measures beginning in 2018.

Measuring the Success of Physical and Hand Therapy Programs: Ten Factors That Will Make or Break a Practice
    Ancillary Care Strategies
As healthcare reform and related healthcare delivery changes continue to reshape the landscape, managers and therapists at physical and occupational therapy practices are looking for opportunities to enhance patient outcomes and reverse declining revenue trends. While focusing on financial benchmarking is certainly appropriate in economically challenging times, all too often therapy managers measure success according to the number of patients scheduled or the dollar amount billed. However, this is only part of a much larger picture.

Despite Obamacare, gap health insurance market explodes
    Reuters
Despite the promise of coverage through the U.S. Affordable Care Act, the number of people applying for non-compliant, short-term health insurance policies was up more than 100 percent in 2014, according to new data available from companies who broker these policies. This type of health insurance is exactly the kind that the ACA, known commonly as Obamacare, was supposed to upgrade.

How net neutrality may put healthcare innovation at risk
    FierceHealthIT
Net neutrality is harmful to the healthcare industry — putting innovation at risk and raising costs, writes Sean Hackbarth, a blogger for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. In February, the Federal Communications Commission ruled in favor of net neutrality, declaring there would be no paid prioritization, meaning no "fast lanes" for certain kinds of Internet traffic. Hackbarth points to comments made by John Graham, of the National Center for Policy Analysis, and Roslyn Layton, of Aalborg University's Center for Communication, Media & Information Studies, on how the FCC's ruling threatens innovation in the industry.

CMS: ICD-10 test sees 88 percent claims pass, few coding errors
    Healthcare Finance News
More than 88 percent of ICD-10 claims filed during the latest round of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services end-to-end testing passed, the federal agency said, with only 2 percent of rejections coming as a result of ICD-10 coding errors in the claims. CMS said 875 Medicare Administrative Contractors participated in the testing from April 27 through May 1, showing a higher success rate than the previous testing session in January.

Do doctors get paid too little?
    Healthline
Would you be happy if you made $200,000 a year? Apparently, about half of the doctors in the United States who make that kind of money feel they aren't being paid enough. And some medical experts say there are some legitimate reasons for their dissatisfaction. Doctors say they deserve high compensation because they have at least five years of post-college training, they often leave medical school with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt, and they provide a vital service to the community.
