Study: Surgeons don't make nearly as much as patients think
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Patients imagine surgeons make a lot more money, at least on a per-surgery basis, than they really do, according to one new study. The findings are especially striking since they involve orthopedic surgeons, who happen to be among the nation's best-paid doctors. Researchers asked 1,120 patients awaiting or recovering from orthopedic surgery to say how much they thought surgeons should be paid for knee and hip replacements and how much they thought Medicare paid. Then they were told how much Medicare actually paid and asked their reactions. More

Doctors quick to adopt tablets into practice
American Medical News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Physician adoption of tablet computers has grown rapidly, according to a survey of 3,015 physicians in 25 specialties. The survey found that 62 percent of physicians owned a tablet computer, up from 27 percent in 2011, the first full year after the introduction of the iPad set off the newest wave of tablets. By comparison, most surveys put electronic health record use by physicians at around 50 percent, and that has required federal incentive programs to help get adoption to that mark. More

Republicans in the U.S. House joined with 37 Democrats to pass a bill repealing a medical-device tax, chipping away at the 2010 healthcare law in a victory for companies including Medtronic Inc. and Boston Scientific Corp. The 2.3 percent excise tax on sales, estimated to raise $29 billion over the next decade, is due to take effect in 2013. It applies to devices such as hip implants and coronary stents that aren't sold directly to consumers. More

Internists lobby Congress for SGR fix
MedPage Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Several hundred internists and medical students were on Capitol Hill, meeting with their members of Congress to advocate for issues facing internal medicine. Chief among them, not surprisingly, is a fix for the sustainable growth rate, the Medicare formula that, year after year, calls for steep cuts in Medicare reimbursement rates for physicians. Congress always votes to push the cut down the road, and the current "fix" holds Medicare payment rates to doctors steady through the end of 2012. More
