HIPAA security auditors like me visit practices to poke through every nook and cranny of company policy, procedure, documentation, and network security in a HIPAA security assessment. 99% of the time, we find problems, even in well-established practices employing an experienced and security conscientious staff.

    MEET YOUR LEADERSHIP

    Leadership Quote of the Week
    Douglas MacArthur
"A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent."

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Does social media have a place in healthcare?
    By Joan Spitrey
Just like many of you, I have been on the Facebook bandwagon for quite some time. I have really enjoyed it as I have lived all over the country, and it has been a great way to keep up with old friends. But does it have a place in a healthcare career or profession? As I have extended my reach into the big, wide Web, I have come to realize there are a lot of outlets for sharing and getting information. However, just like anything in life, there are certainly pros and cons to these new-found resources.

How to balance patient satisfaction and quality care
    FierceHealthcare
"In essence, we want physicians to care about satisfaction, but not too much," Joshua J. Fenton, M.D., MPH, of the University of California, Davis, recently told Medscape in an interview following up on his team's 2012 widely cited study indicating that highly satisfied patients had higher hospital admissions, higher drug expenditures and were even 26 percent more likely to die.

CMS data dump tells policymakers nothing
    The Hill
In April 2014, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services released the details of $77 billion in payments to physicians, labs, and other medical providers in an effort to increase transparency. But after the dust of the screaming headlines fades, what can policymakers really glean from this Medicare data dump? Quite simply: nothing.

Health insurers push for change to Obamacare
    The Hill
Health insurance companies are urging lawmakers to widen the availability of cheap, bare-bones coverage under Obamacare that they say could entice more consumers to enter the marketplaces. The so-called catastrophic plans are at the center of a new proposal from America's Health Insurance Plans, the main trade group for the health insurance industry. AHIP said that creating a cheaper tier of coverage on the exchanges that is available to everyone would "further the public policy goal of affordability."

Industry experts voice plans for making good on ICD-10 delay
    EHR Intelligence
Members of the healthcare industry had the opportunity to make their views on the most recent ICD-10 delay heard during a National Committee on Vital and Health Statistic subcommittee hearing held yesterday in the nation's capital. As part of the hearing's final session, industry stakeholders representing providers, professionals, and coders echoed one another in their belief that that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and healthcare as whole needs to take corrective action in order to avoid squandering an important opportunity.

Variability in EHR use by individual practitioners 'high'
Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association via FierceEMR
Physicians, even those within the same practice, use their electronic health record systems differently, which may affect differences in quality and cost outcomes, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. The researchers, from the Center for Healthcare Informatics and Policy at Weill Cornell Medical College and elsewhere, hypothesized that the effects of EHRs may depend in part on how they're used, not just on whether EHRs are available.

Patient access is key to population health
    Healthcare Finance News
Healthcare reform and the shift toward value instead of volume underscore the importance of population health management for improving patient outcomes on a large scale. One essential component of a comprehensive population health program is patient access. With healthcare reform now opening the door to more insured patients who have greater say in where they go for care, having a robust patient access strategy at the center of population health initiatives is becoming paramount.

The battle to topple Obamacare heats up; more
    Politico via Medscape
With time galloping along toward November's midterm elections, House GOP members and leaders are desperate to find an alternative to the Affordable Care Act — aka Obamacare. Rep Steve Scalise, R, Louisiana, thinks he and his colleagues have found just that alternative, and he's been pushing both Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R, Virginia, to bring his bill to the House floor, according to a report on the website of Politico, as well as other media outlets.
