    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Health insurance giants are in a frenzied search for merger partners
    Los Angeles Times
The nation's biggest health insurers are speed-dating one another, searching for a partner worthy of a multibillion-dollar merger. Anthem Inc. and other industry giants are flush with cash and eager to swallow up competitors as they increasingly vie for individual customers on Obamacare exchanges and government business tied to Medicare and Medicaid. As a result, employers and consumers may be left with fewer choices and little relief from ever-rising medical costs, experts say.

IT experts tell Senate panel to keep meaningful use requirements
    Modern Healthcare
Three health IT experts told members of a Senate committee to stay the course on the federal electronic health-record incentive payment program and its increasingly tough meaningful-use requirements, arguing that the program's benefits outweigh its problems. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, put the question to the three panelists directly, pointing to the proposed rule for Stage 3 of the program issued in March, which would become effective in 2018.

Measuring the Success of Physical and Hand Therapy Programs: Ten Factors That Will Make or Break a Practice
    Ancillary Care Strategies
As healthcare reform and related healthcare delivery changes continue to reshape the landscape, managers and therapists at physical and occupational therapy practices are looking for opportunities to enhance patient outcomes and reverse declining revenue trends. While focusing on financial benchmarking is certainly appropriate in economically challenging times, all too often therapy managers measure success according to the number of patients scheduled or the dollar amount billed. However, this is only part of a much larger picture.

OIG fraud alert targets physician compensation agreements
    FierceHealthPayer
A new fraud alert released by the Office of the Inspector General highlights the agency's renewed interest in physician compensation arrangements that could violate anti-kickback regulations if payments do not reflect fair market value. The OIG specifically cites issues tied to medical directorships that pay for services a physician did not actually provide. In addition to payments that go above fair market value, compensation arrangements that account for the volume or value of referrals could be considered anti-kickback violations.

Study: Digital health solutions may save US health system $100 billion
    By Scott E. Rupp
Accenture, in a new report, estimates that FDA-approved digital health solutions — an Internet-connected device or software created for detection or treatment of a medical indication — may have saved up to $6 billion in cost savings last year, primarily driven by medication adherence, behavior modifications and fewer emergency room visits. And digital health solutions are expected to save the U.S. healthcare system an additional $100 billion over the next four years.

4 tips for engaging physicians in ICD-10 training
    FierceHealthIT
When it comes to ICD-10 preparation, a wise course would be to control what you can and prepare for what you can't, says Adam L. Myers, M.D., chief medical officer of Texas Health Physicians Group. Though many organizations have been waiting to prepare, thinking there would be yet another delay, that doesn't appear likely at this point, Myers writes in an article at Hospitals & Health Networks.

The private medical practice is not dead yet
    Forbes
There is a common assumption regarding a large percentage of physicians in the U.S.: The private practice is on the endangered species list, and all doctors will soon be working for big healthcare providers. If this supposition turns out to be true it would represent the demise of a long-standing and cherished method of healthcare delivery. From an entrepreneur's viewpoint, it would be the end of a large number of small businesses — eliminating a lot of support staff jobs as well. Not good news. But is it true?

Industry jargon trips up millennials' health insurance enrollment process
    FierceHealthPayer
Young adults have a particularly challenging time signing up for plans sold on the federal health insurance exchange largely because of confusing industry jargon, according to a study published in the Journal of Adolescent Health. In the study, researchers observed about 30 college-educated, Philadelphia-based adults who were between 19 and 30 years old as they navigated through the online enrollment process.

6 ways to improve queries with ICD-10
    Government Health IT
One of the possible factors that can drag down medical coder productivity after the ICD-10 deadline on Oct. 1 could be an increase in queries. If physicians don't document the details that support the granularity of ICD-10 codes, medical coders will have the added work of writing queries and reading responses. It also means physicians will have to take time away from treating patients to answer the queries. Medical coders can improve their queries to make them as efficient and useful as possible with these six steps.
