    Like many of you, our practice has undergone a technological transformation over the past 10 years. In 2004, Advanced Bone & Joint was among the first 6% of practices in the country with an EMR installed. By 2011, this number had risen to 54%, and by the end of 2013, more than 78% of medical practices had an EMR in place.

    Chief medical information officers say they are frustrated, overwhelmed, stressed and anxious, among other feelings, according to Vi Shaffer, vice president of Gartner, a technology research firm. Among top challenges these CMIOs face, "Stage 2 meaningful use" overwhelmingly was the most frequent response, followed by "optimization" and "analytics."

    Insurance coverage expands, but gaps remain

    Two new U.S. government reports provide a statistical snapshot of health and health insurance coverage in 2013, before new coverage options took effect under the Affordable Care Act. On a positive note, fewer Americans were uninsured in 2013 than in 2010 — 14.4 percent versus 16 percent, respectively.

    Premiums rise at big insurers, fall at small rivals under health law

    Hundreds of thousands of consumers nationwide who bought insurance plans under the Affordable Care Act will face a choice this fall: swallow higher premiums to stay in their plan, or save money by switching. That is the picture emerging from proposed 2015 insurance rates in the 10 states that have completed their filings, which stretch from Rhode Island to Washington state.
