    AROUND THE INDUSTRY

Exploiting the value of electronic health records
    Mike Wokasch
With financial incentives provided to support the Affordable Care Act, physician offices, clinics and hospitals are gradually implementing electronic health records, and they will likely be a reality for most patients within the next couple of years. But even if every healthcare provider uses electronic health records, we will not be able to exploit the full potential of the available health information. Patient medical records will not be as portable as we might expect. So how does this get fixed?

    Health insurance rebates decline
The Associated Press via ABC News
Those health insurance rebates that some consumers got last year will total much less for 2013, but the Obama administration says that's a good thing. The Health and Human Services Department announced that employers and individual policyholders will receive $500 million in rebates this summer. It's half the $1.1 billion returned last year.

Malpractice reform key to reducing costs of defensive medicine
    FierceHealthcare
Instead of an arbitrary cap on the amount of damages that may be awarded in malpractice suits, the Center for American Progress proposes reforming medical malpractice policies to protect physicians and reduce the cost of defensive medicine. Defensive medicine or the practice of ordering excessive and unnecessary medical tests and procedures to avoid a potential malpractice suit has become more common in a litigious society. But its use increases healthcare costs without improving health outcomes, the Center said in an announcement.

Tool forecasts remote patient monitoring ROI
    InformationWeek
The Center for Connected Health and the Center for Technology and Aging have collaborated on the development of a web-based tool for analyzing the return on investment in remote patient monitoring technologies. Up to now, few payers have covered remote monitoring of patients with serious illnesses because there was no evidence of ROI.

Some immigrants excluded from healthcare overhaul
    The Associated Press via Time
President Barack Obama has championed two sweeping policy changes that could transform how people live in the U.S.: affordable healthcare for all and a path to citizenship for the 11 million immigrants illegally in the country. But many immigrants will have to wait more than a decade to qualify for healthcare benefits under the proposed immigration overhaul being debated by Congress, ensuring a huge swath of people will remain uninsured as the centerpiece of the healthcare law launches in 2014.

The marketing of Obamacare exchanges begins
    CNNMoney
In about 100 days, Obamacare health insurance exchanges in each state will open for enrollment. But a lot of Americans don't know that. That's why advocacy groups around the nation are stepping up their efforts to educate consumers about the options that could be available to them through Obamacare, formally known as the Affordable Care Act, come Oct. 1.

Doctors perform thousands of unnecessary surgeries
    USA Today
Tens of thousands of times each year, patients are wheeled into the nation's operating rooms for surgery that isn't necessary, a USA Today review of government records and medical databases finds. Some patients fall victim to predators who enrich themselves by bilking insurers for operations that are not medically justified. Even more turn to doctors who simply lack the competence or training to recognize when a surgical procedure can be avoided, either because the medical facts don't warrant it or because there are non-surgical treatments that would better serve the patient.

Providers navigate potential uses for Google Glass in healthcare
    FierceHealthIT
It's time to think about how physicians — and not just techies at Google Headquarters — can use Google Glass. For example, Rafael Grossman, a surgeon at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, can think of a few ways he'd use the technology, as he outlines in a new blog post. He points out one of the key advantages of Google Glass for a physician — that only the user can see and hear what's going through the Glass. That, he says, ensures that telemedicine can be private and personalized.
