Federal health exchange plans to automatically renew
    The Wall Street Journal
The Obama administration plans to automatically renew for next year the health plans and premium subsidies that consumers obtained through the Affordable Care Act's federal insurance exchange. The move, which will apply to most of the five million people who selected insurance through HealthCare.gov for 2014, will make it easier for consumers to stay in their plans and retain tax credits lowering the cost of coverage. It also will relieve pressure on the federal exchange, which was crippled during parts of its first enrollment period.

    FierceHealthIT
Providers responding to a recent survey on ICD-10 expressed concerns about the impact the coding switch--set to go into effect Oct. 1, 2015, after being delayed in April — will have on revenue, productivity and workflow. Of 349 providers surveyed between May and June by the American Health Information Management Association and the eHealth Initiative, 38 percent said they think revenue will decrease in the year immediately following the transition; only 6 percent said they think revenue will increase.

    Health Data Management
The American Medical Association and Medical Group Management Association have sent a letter to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requesting an extension of the July 1 deadline to help EPs avoid MU financial penalties. According to the trade associations, a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking published May 20 that proposes permitting EPs who are unable to fully implement 2014 certified EHR technology to report for the 2014 reporting year using 2011 CEHRT and using 2013 criteria is complicating matters.

What is driving a physician shortage, how can it be stopped?
    EHRIntelligence
As its name insists, the Affordable Care Act is supposed to give more American access to reasonably-price healthcare, but this affordability would prove fruitless if the number of primary care physicians in the United States continues to decrease.

How much are US doctors worth? Depends who you ask
    Modern Healthcare
Is the much higher compensation for U.S. physicians compared with their counterparts in other advanced countries justified? Noted healthcare blogger Dr. Kevin Pho strongly objected to a blog post by Sarah Kliff on the popular Vox website. It cited data showing that even U.S. primary-care doctors earn a lot more than their colleagues abroad. High physician pay is "a pretty significant part of the reason" why the U.S. spends far more per person on healthcare than any other advanced country, she wrote.

How can HIE drive meaningful use, healthcare reform via HIT?
    EHRIntelligence
Without health information exchange, how will health data follow patients along the continuum of care? Beginning in Stage 2 meaningful use, eligible professionals and hospitals must meet certain requirements involving the exchange of health information. HIE, however, has many other roles to play, such as allowing healthcare organizations to become integrated delivery networks and support various payment reforms.

It's time to redesign EHRs to improve patient safety
    FierceEMR
Providers have been lashing out against subpar electronic health record design for years. They gripe that not only do poorly designed systems impede workflow and cost too much, they also create new patient safety problems and don't share data with other systems to coordinate care, as promised. Still, the industry hasn't done much to address these concerns. However, maybe now they'll have to.
