    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Tablets and portals may not be a hit, but wearables show promise
    By Scott E. Rupp
It seems patient engagement efforts may require more work if the latest survey holds true. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, giving patients access to portals and tablets "does not have a great impact on their understanding of their care and treatment." The hypothesis was that tablets and apps would result in greater knowledge of team members' names and roles, planned tests and procedures, medications and higher patient activation.

OIG fraud alert targets physician compensation agreements
    FierceHealthPayer
A new fraud alert released by the Office of the Inspector General highlights the agency's renewed interest in physician compensation arrangements that could violate anti-kickback regulations if payments do not reflect fair market value. The OIG specifically cites issues tied to medical directorships that pay for services a physician did not actually provide. In addition to payments that go above fair market value, compensation arrangements that account for the volume or value of referrals could be considered anti-kickback violations. Subsidizing office costs can also be considered a kickback, since it reduces the financial burden for physicians, according to the OIG.

How health systems can help physician practices prepare for ICD-10
    FierceHealthIT
Many physician practices are ill-prepared for ICD-10, and health systems must ensure the right tools are in the hands of those who need them most, according to Bill Reid, senior vice president of product management and partners at SCI Solutions. "Hospitals risk unsuccessful transitions if physician offices in their communities aren't ready," Reid writes for ICD10Monitor.com. Recent studies show that many still are not, despite the Oct. 1 implementation deadline looming.

8 epic EHR implementations with the biggest price tags in 2015
    Becker's Hospital Review
Investments in EHR systems are undoubtedly costly, but some implementations appear to carry more costs than others. Implementation costs vary system to system and hospital to hospital. Prices fluctuate based on what types of additional features and modules a hospital selects. And, according to a Politico report, some EHR vendors charge for additional service fees while others don't.

Is America's broadband infrastructure ready for the Silver Tsunami?
    By Christina Thielst
When the cable guy recently came out to my house due to slow connections, I learned that the wire between the street and the house was not capable of handling the current wireless and Internet requirements of my family. With this in mind, a new report has me wondering if the U.S. broadband infrastructure will be capable of handling the needs of the impending Silver Tsunami — the aging of baby boomers. The report assesses the adoption and use of Internet-enabled health and fitness devices.

Behind higher physician fees, a big problem lurks
    HealthLeaders Media
Now that King v. Burwell is no longer a distraction and millions of Americans' healthcare subsidies are safe, hospital and health system leaders can spend their energy preparing for the inevitable shift toward value-based care and all that move entails, which has included the search for similar care partners willing to enter into a joint-venture with or outright acquire. The trend of hospital consolidation and physician group acquisition isn't expected to slow down. In fact, healthcare leaders believe that consolidation, whether it is with hospitals, physicians, or post-acute care providers, is a means to impact the financial goals of hospitals and health systems.

What doctors really want from the latest medical technology
    The Wall Street Journal
Technology has much to offer doctors, but it is not the health-care technology agenda you hear about in the news. Big data, the electronic medical record, and the connected patient are frequently hyped as remedies to medicine's ills. But improving and restoring health is a messy business that requires investment in human capital more than physical capital. Here's a modest technology agenda from the perspective of the front-line clinician who hopes to master their craft and continually improve the care they provide to their patients.

How physicians should embrace mobile device use
    FierceMobileHealthcare
There are many reasons physicians should embrace mobile devices in their workday, from sharing and accessing data to real-time communications and fostering telehealth initiatives, according to John Smithwick, CEO of Nashville, Tennessee-based patient engagement and care-coordination platform company RoundingWell. Smithwick, writing for Managed Healthcare Executive, says patients and consumers now expect instant communication, but adds that it's important that such efforts protects users' data and privacy.
