It was recently reported that cyber-attacks against doctors and hospitals are on the rise. These cyber-attacks are costly at over $6 billion per year for the U.S. healthcare industry. According to a report by the Ponemon Institute:
    • In just five years, cyber-attacks have more than doubled.
    • An average data breach costs a hospital $2.1 million.
    • Nearly 90 percent of healthcare providers were hit by breaches in the past two years – half of them criminal in nature.

Measuring the Success of Physical and Hand Therapy Programs: Ten Factors That Will Make or Break a Practice
    Ancillary Care Strategies
As healthcare reform and related healthcare delivery changes continue to reshape the landscape, managers and therapists at physical and occupational therapy practices are looking for opportunities to enhance patient outcomes and reverse declining revenue trends. While focusing on financial benchmarking is certainly appropriate in economically challenging times, all too often therapy managers measure success according to the number of patients scheduled or the dollar amount billed. However, this is only part of a much larger picture.

US proposes bundling some Medicare knee, hip replacement payments
    Reuters
The U.S. agency that runs federally funded health insurance programs has proposed restructuring payments for hip and knee replacement surgeries, some of the most common surgeries received by patients covered by the plans. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services invited providers on Thursday to comment on a proposal that would hold hospitals in 75 geographic areas accountable for the quality of care they deliver to Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries for hip and knee replacements from surgery through recovery.

CMS announces grace period for ICD-10 mistakes
    Medscape
In a significant concession to organized medicine, the Medicare program announced a 1-year grace period for claims bearing the fastidious ICD-10 diagnostic codes that go into effect October 1. Here's the grace: Claims won't be rejected for payment simply because the ICD-10 code submitted isn't specific enough. The ICD-10 codes are more numerous, longer, and more exact than the ICD-9 code set they replace as mandated by federal law.

Doctors: EHRs have not improved productivity
    By Scott E. Rupp
The Physicians Alliance of America has found that EHRs increase physicians' administrative burdens and decrease their productivity. According to the survey of 250 pediatric, family medicine and internal medicine physicians, 67 percent of respondents said they spend at least a half-hour charting at the end of the day. This marks an overwhelming amount of charting for those using technology, which is meant to decrease the time spent charting and away from patient care.

CMS proposes 0.5 percent doc fee hike
    MedPage Today
Physicians will see a 0.5 percent overall increase in Medicare reimbursement in 2016 under the proposed physician fee schedule announced Wednesday by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. There is also some "pain" in the CMS proposal: gastroenterologists are getting cut 5 percent and radiation oncologists face a 3 percent pay cut. But pathologists are the big winners with an 8 percent raise. The proposed fee schedule, which will be finalized this fall, is the first to be issued since Congress repealed the much-abhorred sustainable growth rate payment formula in April. The 0.5 percent update was specified in the SGR repeal bill, known as the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015.

Financials risks of implementing certified EHR technology
    EHRIntelligence
Foremost among meaningful use requirements is the use of certified EHR technology without which an eligible professional or hospital cannot successfully complete attestation and receive EHR incentives. Along with meeting the requirements of various meaningful use stages, eligible providers must work closely with their EHR vendors to ensure that their EHR technology adheres to EHR certification criteria and enables providers to demonstrate meaningful use compliance.

Doctor pay eclipses $240,000 as value-based model boosts primary care
    Forbes
Compensation of primary care physicians continues to outpace that of their specialist counterparts rising nearly 3.6 percent last year to $241,273, according to the 2015 provider compensation report from the Medical Group Management Association. Though specialists make much more than their primary counterparts with their total compensation rising to $411,852 in 2014, the rate of increase was only 2.39 percent from 2013, according to MGMA, the largest organization of doctor practices in the U.S.

Beyond tech: The human side of remote monitoring and health call centers
    By Karen R. Thomas
What comes to mind when you think about remote patient monitoring? The first thing most people think of are the various technologies that make this transfer of health data possible. They envision the remote monitoring devices that collect data such as weight, pulse, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, blood glucose readings and so on, and transmit that data back to a technology hub. What isn't often discussed, however, is the human element that is the real power behind this type of telehealth.

These days, it's merger mania in the health insurance industry. Aetna shook the insurance world when it announced a $37 billion deal to buy Humana, FierceHealthPayer reported. Anthem and Cigna have been embroiled in sometimes-contentious talks about a possible Anthem takeover of its fellow insurer, and UnitedHealth Group, the final member of the "Big Five," also still may enter the merger fray.
