Physicians are easy ... easy targets
Tom Ealey    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Physicians are easy — easy targets for embezzlers. Why? Money is a wonderful commodity, everyone can use it, the color is always perfect and it always fits. Physicians are usually too busy to have hands-on involvement with the revenue cycle. The revenue cycle is ridiculously complex; creates a massive stream of data and reams of paper; patient billing claims may require multiple passes through the business office; and often the patients expect to be confused by the billings and statements and will accept any reasonable sounding explanation from staff. An ASC's guide to patient-acquisition marketing
SurgiStrategies    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Competition for patients is fierce. Large hospitals and health systems are buying physician practices and employing surgeons to secure a steady pipeline of patients. They are also spending millions of dollars on sophisticated marketing and advertising campaigns. To complicate matters further, patients can now easily research their healthcare options online rather than solely relying on a referral from their primary care physician. To win market share in today's healthcare environment, surgery centers have to develop and execute a highly focused patient-acquisition marketing strategy. More

Hospitals behind physician recruiting for not-so-solo practices
American Medical News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recent surveys on physician recruitment find hospitals to be far more active than medical groups — especially small ones — in using search firms to find doctors. The hospitals looking for doctors often employ them in settings that, on the surface, look a lot like the offices of solo or small practices. More

Colorado court: Nurses can provide anesthesia
The Associated Press via Ventura County Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Colorado Court of Appeals ruled that advanced-practice nurses can administer anesthesia without a doctor's supervision, a ruling the prompted a warning by doctors that patients could suffer serious medical complications and receive inadequate care. Hospitals said the move was necessary because there aren't enough doctors, and the crisis will only get worse as the country adapts to new healthcare laws that open the doors to millions of new patients. Providers fear fraud allegations
FierceHealthcare    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Providers are facing a wider magnifying glass these days, as government officials employ a controversial payment recovery strategy — the "credible allegation of fraud" provision, which essentially puts a freeze on payments for allegations that may or may not be true. The results of such payment freezes could financially ruin providers. More

Gulf between health IT potential and reality remains large
FierceHealthIT    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As the Meaningful Use Work Group of the Health IT Policy Committee prepares its recommendations for meaningful use stage 3, its members should take a long hard look at the difference between the potential and the reality of health IT. If they ask for too much, many providers will be unable to keep up, and there will be pushback. If they ask for too little, many providers will be content to do the minimum required for incentives without using technology's full potential to improve quality of care. More
