    AAOE Volunteering
    Written by Brian Bizub, BSHA
AAOE needs volunteers to help the organization maintain its vision and mission. The valuable information gained from fellow members and AAOE volunteers prompted my own decision to become a member of the Board of Directors. In efforts make the changes discussed at this year's strategic planning committee and annual conference, I would like to highlight some of the benefits of being a volunteer and ask each of you to join one of the many committees established based on the organization and member's needs.

Measuring the Success of Physical and Hand Therapy Programs: Ten Factors That Will Make or Break a Practice
    Ancillary Care Strategies
As healthcare reform and related healthcare delivery changes continue to reshape the landscape, managers and therapists at physical and occupational therapy practices are looking for opportunities to enhance patient outcomes and reverse declining revenue trends. While focusing on financial benchmarking is certainly appropriate in economically challenging times, all too often therapy managers measure success according to the number of patients scheduled or the dollar amount billed. However, this is only part of a much larger picture.

Despite ONC's guidance, most providers have no health IT roadmap
    By Scott E. Rupp
Most healthcare providers are aware of the role of digital health in enhancing healthcare efficiency. Yet more than half of healthcare providers still do not have a health IT roadmap — despite the proposed roadmap released in January by the Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Connected health infrastructure is emerging as a binding agent for diverse devices and workflows, aiding diagnosis, monitoring and prevention in the healthcare industry.

Frustration with Stage 3 meaningful use continues to build
    EHRIntelligence
The long wait for the publication of the final rule for Stage 3 meaningful use is allowing for frustration to build before these meaningful use requirements are ultimately enacted. According to Brookings Institution Fellow Niam Yaraghi, the proposed objectives for this next phase of the EHR Incentive Programs will made success unachievable for eligible professionals and hospitals because the onus is not on these providers alone.

Is hospital employment of physicians peaking or pausing?
    Medscape
One year's worth of data does not establish a trend. However, a new report from the physician recruitment firm Merritt Hawkins suggests a drop-off in hospitals hiring physicians. Of the 3120 searches for physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants the firm handled between April 2014 and March 2015, 51 percent were on behalf of hospital and hospital-owned medical groups, a big drop from 64 percent for the previous 2 years. It was the first decline since 2003-2004, when hospitals accounted for 11 percent of the company's searches, according to the report.

A revolution in how doctors are paid isn't really changing how doctors are paid
    The Washington Post
It's one of the grand ideas that is supposed to revolutionize U.S. healthcare: reward doctors who keep patients well with fewer tests, procedures, and appointments. That might register as barely profound to most of us, but it is a radical shift in the incentives that doctors and hospitals face. Under the Affordable Care Act, some doctor's groups and hospitals have banded together in accountable care organizations to treat Medicare patients under this new philosophy. If the patient stays healthier with fewer appointments, the providers get a share of the cost savings.

First, do no harm: When healthcare practitioners work while sick
    By Dorothy L. Tengler
"Go to school. You'll be fine," or "If I miss work, I'll be fired." These are common misconceptions most of us have learned throughout life. Why is it so difficult for us to stay home when ill? The reasons are different for each of us. For the general public, one reason is more than 40 million American workers get no paid sick leave. But what about healthcare professionals? When clinicians work with symptoms of infection, they can put patients and colleagues at risk.

With Anthem-Cigna deal near, the health insurance industry is headed toward a 'big three'
    The Washington Post
The nation's big five health insurers will become the big three, with a $48 billion merger imminent between Cigna and Anthem, according to The Wall Street Journal. A merged company would serve 53 million people and is part of a dramatic, long-predicted reshaping of the health insurance landscape as a result of the Affordable Care Act. UnitedHealthcare has 45 million members, and Humana and Aetna announced they would merge in July, creating a company serving 33 million people.
