    Counteracting Workplace Drama
    Provided by AAOE
As a practice leader, a big part of our job is motivating people. We motivate them to get things done, to do better, to be faster, more efficient, friendlier, more focused, less talkative, more helpful. Few things destroy a culture's humanity and productivity like workplace drama. We have all witnessed countless scenarios, heard quips and even watched videos of the best and most entertaining examples of employee/physician/manager drama; dealing with workplace drama is probably the least rewarding part of being a practice leader.

Knee OA: Successfully Bracing Disproportional Legs
    Townsend Design
It's not easy to fit a standard size rigid OA knee brace on an abnormally shaped leg. Large thigh, small calf. Extra wide knee on a skinny leg. Disproportional legs are often the norm, especially with older or obese patients with OA related knee pain that reduces mobility and quality of life. While custom knee braces can be ordered, they are tougher to get authorized and reimbursed. The patient also has a more substantial co-payment because custom braces cost more to fabricate. So the majority of OA braces being fit in physician clinics are OTS (off-the-shelf) in standard sizes -- generally ranging from XS to 2XL.

The impact of health IT on workflow
    By Scott Rupp
A new report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality examines the enhanced understanding of the causal relationship between health information technology implementation and various ambulatory care workflow aspects. The report was conducted across six ambulatory care practices from across the United States, and reviewed health systems that had implemented different health IT products or systems.

Congress considering changes to meaningful use requirements
    EHRIntelligence
A bill to relax meaningful use requirements for ambulatory surgery centers has passed the Senate and now awaits a vote by the House of Representatives. The Electronic Health Fairness Act of 2015 is sponsored by Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., was first introduced on May 15 and has seen little activity until July 30 when it was referred to the Senate Committee on Finance where it received an amendment.

Do women doctors need to negotiate more assertively?
    Medscape
It's no secret that female physicians earn less than their male counterparts, and that the problem has persisted for many years, despite the fact that women are entering medicine in greater and greater numbers. Even after specialty and other workforce factors that have long been cited as reasons for the pay gap are controlled for, research shows that female doctors earn less than their male peers.

Docs far behind hospitals in ICD-10 implementation
    FierceHealthIT
While a majority of hospitals and health systems say they are ready or will be ready for ICD-10 by Oct. 1, many physician practices continue to struggle with implementation. Less than 50 percent of physician practices responding to a recent Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange survey said they would be ready for the new code set, compared to 90 percent of hospitals and health systems. WEDI conducted the survey in June, which included 621 respondents, according to an announcement.

Congress tackles EHR woes, information blocking, interoperability
    HealthLeaders Media
Congress has taken notice of healthcare providers' woes and frustrations dealing with electronic health records and lawmakers are determined to work out a solution that promotes progress in health technology as well as better care for patients. Federal incentives to encourage physicians and hospitals to adopt EHRs have begun to dry up as CMS winds down its Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs. Total Medicare bonus payments to eligible professionals and hospitals have decreased and will last through 2016, but effective in 2015, CMS has started imposing penalties on participants who don't achieve Meaningful Use with their EHRs.

Digital health: Moving toward a healthcare revolution
    Healthcare IT News
Runners were the first to discover the potential of wearable devices several years ago. They started using watches and pedometers to measure steps, location and heart rate. As technology became increasingly sophisticated, early technology adopters and fitness enthusiasts followed suit. Today, nearly 75 percent of adults are using a fitness tracker. And, it is projected that about 120 million wearable devices will be sold by 2018. The upshot? The eventual future of healthcare is one in which most patients will be hyper-connected to a network of devices and generating an astounding amount of data.

Value-based purchasing is the new normal: Opportunities for savings in the supply chain
    Lexology
Earlier this year, the Department of Health and Human Services announced significant changes to Medicare by setting quantitative goals for its value-based payment programs. This payment reform is not only accelerating the shift away from fee-for-service toward a value-based system but also driving fundamental changes in how care is delivered. Health care entities must leverage their procurement operations to adapt to this new era of value-based care in order to remain profitable while increasing the quality of care.

CMS sends a lifeline on Stark after Tuomey affirmed: What health providers should know
    The National Law Review
The Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit upheld a record verdict of $237 million against Tuomey Healthcare Systems in the case of U.S. ex rel. Drakeford v. Tuomey Healthcare System, Inc. for violations of the False Claims Act and the Stark Law. Tuomey allegedly violated these laws in over 21,000 claims, submitting bills to Medicare worth $39 million. The False Claims Act allows up to triple damages per claim, as well as a penalty of up to $11,000 per violation. Perhaps in light of such a verdict, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued a set of proposed changes and clarifications to the Stark Law
