  • MAKING HEADLINES AT AAOE THIS WEEK

The Wild West of Orthopedic EHRs
    By James Egloff
As a Texan I was raised watching "Spaghetti Westerns" on Saturday afternoons with my father. Often during the climactic chase scene the good guys (note the white hats) would be on horseback in pursuit of the bad guys (note the black hats) who were getting away. On cue, the leading man would shout, "We'll cut 'em off at the pass!" In short order the good guys would take a short cut (unknown to the bad guys), get in position (at the pass, no less), and thwart the bad guys, saving the day.

    LEADERSHIP QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Knee OA: Successfully Bracing Disproportional Legs
    Townsend Design
It's not easy to fit a standard size rigid OA knee brace on an abnormally shaped leg. Large thigh, small calf. Extra wide knee on a skinny leg. Disproportional legs are often the norm, especially with older or obese patients with OA related knee pain that reduces mobility and quality of life. While custom knee braces can be ordered, they are tougher to get authorized and reimbursed. The patient also has a more substantial co-payment because custom braces cost more to fabricate. So the majority of OA braces being fit in physician clinics are OTS (off-the-shelf) in standard sizes -- generally ranging from XS to 2XL.

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Waves of change: Helping staff navigate the turbulent tides of healthcare
    By Christina Thielst
With an emphasis on reducing costs while improving quality and access, the transformation of the U.S. healthcare delivery system is creating additional pressure at the point of care — the encounters between clinicians and their patients. While change is due, it also requires balance and support for those who are caught at the crux as new models of care are being rolled out and payment models are still being developed and implemented.

Survey finds decreasing satisfaction with EHRs
    Healthcare Dive
Survey results released by AmericanEHR Partners and AMA indicate declining satisfaction with EHRs compared to five years ago, with about half of the respondents reporting a negative impact on costs, efficiency or productivity. The 2014 survey found only 34 percent of respondents satisfied or very satisfied with their EHR system, while five years ago it was 61 percent.

Health insurer mergers signify shift in healthcare marketplace
    U.S. News & World Report
A pair of mergers involving four of the nation's five for-profit health insurance Goliaths — Cigna Corp. and Anthem, Aetna Inc. and Humana Inc.—provoked a swift reaction from doctors who fear they will rob patients of treatment options and doctors of their bargaining power. But what may be just as significant about the planned mergers, experts say, is that they signify a major shift in the nation's health care marketplace.

ICD-10: Strategies for countering common objections
    HealthLeaders Media
ICD-10 implementation is coming in less than 50 days. Despite the imminent transition, many physician practices lag behind in preparation, likely due in part to ICD-10 resistance from the American Medical Association and other state medical associations over the years. CMS and the AMA recently came to an agreement over ICD-10-CM audit and payment flexibility for physicians, but the agreement doesn't necessarily mean an end to physician resistance to the new code set.

Stage 3 meaningful use: What's next?
    Healthcare IT News
Stage 3 of meaningful use is shaping up to be the most challenging and detailed level yet for healthcare providers. Among the elements that warrant attention are quality reporting, clinical decision support and security risk analysis. But first things first: Stage 3 may not be as near final as some would hope, and there are likely to be modifications before a final rule is issued, says Pamela Chapman, director of clinical product and regulatory affairs at Austin, Texas-based e-MDs.

Telehealth payment parity laws rising rapidly across states
    mHealthIntelligence
As the nationwide telehealth movement continues to make progress across the states, it is important to understand the many regulations and policies being adopted to properly reimburse physicians for offering telemedicine services. Telehealth commercial insurance coverage laws (including payment parity laws) are one key area of legal battles taking place between insurers and providers today, as states continue to pass varying and sometimes controversial legislation with regard to physician telemedicine reimbursement.

Moving to the cloud: Key considerations for healthcare technology
    Health Data Management
Like enterprises in every industry, healthcare organizations are done debating whether to adopt cloud computing. Instead, they are planning for the right ways to take advantage of cloud computing's flexibility, agility, cost efficiency and scalability, without impacting the organization's confidence in the safety and security of its information. Moving key data, applications and even entire business processes to the cloud requires a well-thought-out game plan resulting from in-depth, open-minded analyses all applications and workflows in order to best determine what to migrate now, what to migrate later and what to keep in-house for at least some period of time.
