Knee OA: Successfully Bracing Disproportional Legs
    Townsend Design
It's not easy to fit a standard size rigid OA knee brace on an abnormally shaped leg. Large thigh, small calf. Extra wide knee on a skinny leg. Disproportional legs are often the norm, especially with older or obese patients with OA related knee pain that reduces mobility and quality of life. While custom knee braces can be ordered, they are tougher to get authorized and reimbursed. The patient also has a more substantial co-payment because custom braces cost more to fabricate. So the majority of OA braces being fit in physician clinics are OTS (off-the-shelf) in standard sizes -- generally ranging from XS to 2XL.

Do physicians really hate their EHRs?
    By Scott Rupp
Physicians hate their EHRs. Research shows there's no love lost between doctors and the technology. According to a recent study, just 34 percent of physicians said they were "satisfied" or "very satisfied" with their EHR system in 2014, down from 62 percent in 2010. Diving a little deeper, the percentage of physicians unhappy with their system stood at 54 percent in 2014. If there were an election to determine whether to employ the use of EHRs, the majority would say no to this candidate.

Big data, meaningful use, BYOD bring problems, opportunities
    Health IT Analytics
To say that the healthcare industry is in a state of flux may be the understatement of the 21st century. Despite ongoing criticism over the "slow" pace of big data analytics, EHR interoperability, patient engagement, and reimbursement changes, the industry's health IT capabilities are lightyears ahead of where they were just five or six years ago. This rapid acceleration of technology has certainly had its benefits, but its pitfalls are intimately known to clinicians and rule makers alike.

More than 80 percent of healthcare IT leaders say their systems have been compromised
    Computerworld
Eighty-one percent of healthcare executives say their organizations have been compromised by at least one malware, botnet or other kind of cyberattack during the past two years, according to a survey by KPMG. The KPMG report also states that only half of those executives feel that they are adequately prepared to prevent future attacks. The attacks place sensitive patient data at risk of exposure, KPMG said.

With mergers, concerns grow about private Medicare
    The New York Times
As some of the nation's largest health insurers plan to merge, a new report raises fresh concern over the lack of competition in the private Medicare market. The analysis concludes "there is little competition anywhere in the nation." The report from the Commonwealth Fund, a research group, looked at the market share of insurance companies offering private Medicare Advantage plans in 2012. The authors found that 97 percent of markets in United States counties were "highly concentrated," in which a small number of insurers dominated. The lack of competition was worse in rural markets.

4 tips on doing more with less in the workplace
    By Betty Boyd
In the era of tighter budgets and fewer employees, leaders must make difficult — and often creative — decisions to get the job done. These decisions matter, and they will affect each member of the organization differently. The recent economic downturn, underemployment and other indicators have made it imperative that the workplace environment must change. Here are four areas that can be addressed when working with less.
