Outlook and AAOE Listserv organization frustration
Nicole Heilman, AAOE Education & Meetings Specialist    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Lately I have been feeling extra behind on my email upkeep. In an attempt to get more "on top of it," I decided to take some time to re-evaluate my "system." Changing around email folders the other day seemed to help a bit. I felt empowered. At least I was taking action, any action, towards better organization. Suddenly, my feeling of making progress was halted. More

     AROUND THE INDUSTRY

10 steps to maximize reimbursement for total joint replacement at surgery centers
Becker's Spine Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
An upsurge has been noted recently in orthopaedic and multispecialty surgery centers interested in adding high acuity cases — total joint replacements, for example — to their current case mix. Since shifting more complex procedures from the acute care arena to an ambulatory setting is relatively new, the window of opportunity is open for ASCs to negotiate beneficial reimbursement terms for these cases in their existing payor contracts. Affordable Care Act driving healthcare mergers
The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Insurance giant Aetna announced it will buy Coventry Health Care, which provides Medicare and Medicaid services, for $5.7 billion. Two days later, Health Care REIT announced an $845 million deal to acquire McLean's Sunrise Senior Living, which manages 300 senior living facilities in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. The two deals are distinct, but together suggest the healthcare industry is increasingly turning to consolidation as a way to cope with smaller profit margins and higher compliance costs that many anticipate under the Affordable Care Act. Doctor shortage may swell to 130,000 with cap
Bloomberg    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With a shortage of doctors in the U.S. already and millions of new patients set to gain coverage under President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul, American medical schools are struggling to close the gap. One major reason: The residency programs to train new doctors are largely paid for by the federal government, and the number of students accepted into such programs has been capped at the same level for 15 years. SGR repeal cost estimate drops to $245 billion
American Medical News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Reduced projected Medicare spending for the next decade has lowered the estimated cost of repealing Medicare’s sustainable growth rate formula that helps determine physician pay. Eliminating the SGR and freezing Medicare doctor pay rates over 10 years would cost $245 billion, according to new projections from the Congressional Budget Office. Officials previously had estimated that nearly $300 billion would be needed for a pay freeze. More

Hospitals look to become insurers, as well as providers of care
Kaiser Health News and The Washington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Michael Dowling, a burly Ireland native running one of New York's largest hospital networks, is preparing to turn his business model on its head: He wants to keep his hospital beds empty, rather than full. That's because the North Shore-LIJ Health System, with 16 hospitals and more than 300 outpatient centers in Long Island and New York City, is laying the groundwork to be an insurer, as well as a provider of healthcare. FTC order could give physicians a way out of noncompete deals with hospitals
American Medical News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Health law experts say a Federal Trade Commission order allowing some cardiologists in Reno, Nev., to be exempt from their employment contracts’ noncompete clauses is an indication of the increased scrutiny the agency is paying to medical industry consolidation. It also points to a potential strategy for physicians — particularly those in very concentrated hospital markets — looking for a way around noncompete clauses. More
