Knee OA: Successfully Bracing Disproportional Legs
    Townsend Design
It's not easy to fit a standard size rigid OA knee brace on an abnormally shaped leg. Large thigh, small calf. Extra wide knee on a skinny leg. Disproportional legs are often the norm, especially with older or obese patients with OA related knee pain that reduces mobility and quality of life. While custom knee braces can be ordered, they are tougher to get authorized and reimbursed. The patient also has a more substantial co-payment because custom braces cost more to fabricate. So the majority of OA braces being fit in physician clinics are OTS (off-the-shelf) in standard sizes -- generally ranging from XS to 2XL.

Report: Telehealth will have strong impact on home health by 2020
    By Scott E. Rupp
A new report suggests the market for home health technology will see strong growth, and telehealth will have an "impact on nearly every aspect of the healthcare ecosystem." Thus, the global market for home health technologies will grow from somewhere around $3.4 billion in 2014 to more than $13 billion by 2020. Remote medical consultations will constitute the largest portion of this revenue mix, followed by eldercare, medical monitoring, and health and wellness devices.

Slavitt: CMS systems ready for ICD-10 transition
    Health Data Management
As the Oct. 1 compliance deadline nears, a question on the minds of many industry observers is whether Medicare billing systems will in fact be able to successfully process ICD-10 claims starting next month. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services says yes, but some critics are still skeptical. CMS Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt says Medicare systems have been completely converted from ICD-9 to ICD-10 and are fully ready to process claims using the new codes come Oct. 1.

White House takes aim at Medicare and Medicaid billing errors
    NPR
White House budget director Shaun Donovan called for a "more aggressive strategy" to thwart improper government payments to doctors, hospitals and insurance companies in a previously undisclosed letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell earlier this year. Government healthcare programs covering millions of Americans waste billions of tax dollars every year through these improper payments, Donovan said in the Feb. 26, 2015 letter.

    Healthcare IT News
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT announced that two pieces of electronic health record software have had their certifications revoked, meaning providers can no longer use them to attest to meaningful use. While they had previously been certified as part of the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs, two versions of SkyCare 4.2, an EHR developed by Platinum Health Information Systems, have had their certifications "terminated," according to ONC.

    mHealthIntelligence
Patient engagement continues to play a role in the healthcare industry particularly in the physician-patient relationship, as more hospitals and clinics adopt secure messaging tools to allow individuals to communicate with their doctors quickly and easily without data privacy risks. While the implementation of patient portals remains a top method for increasing patient engagement throughout the healthcare space, mobile health tools can also help consumers become more immersed in better managing their health and wellness.

Have insurers established ICD-10 accommodation periods?
    FierceHealthPayer
As the Oct. 1 ICD-10 deadline inches closer, many insurers haven't announced whether they have implemented accommodation periods--when they will pay claims that aren't coded correctly as long as they're in the right family of codes, reports Health Data Management. After Health Data Management contacted seven national insurers, as well as the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association and America's Health Insurance Plans to learn about their ICD-10 contingency plans, only Humana, Aetna and AHIP responded and none actually addressed whether they had accommodation periods prepared.
