  • MAKING HEADLINES AT AAOE THIS WEEK

Committee Update: Advocacy Council — Stage II Attestation Numbers Rise
    AAOE
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is reporting that 143 hospitals and 3,152 providers had attested to Stage II of the Electronic Health Record Incentive Program through August 2014. This marks an increase since the end of July when the agency reported that only 78 hospitals and 1,898 providers had met the meaningful use requirement.

CMS most recently issued a final rule allowing providers to use 2011 certified EHRs to attest to 2013 meaningful use requirements due to complications from EHR vendors upgrading to 2014 certified software. That final rule also pushed back the earliest start of Stage II of the program to 2017. CMS has reported that the EHR Incentive Program has paid out just under $25 billion since the program started in 2011 to incentivize healthcare providers to adopt EHRs.

    AAOE
Every clinical specialty understands that the world of healthcare is changing. Orthopedic practices inside and outside the hospital alike are being driven by legislation and financial pressures to work in concert with other entities — from hospital leadership to insurance providers to patients themselves — to realize cost savings while improving clinical outcomes. In an upcoming issue we will provide a survey that is meant to uncover the new business models, necessary partnerships and specific practices that help them achieve this tricky goal.

As part of upper-level management in your practices, you have likely had the occasion to deal with the entertaining topic of time off for you with your physicians as a salaried employee. As part of a larger practice and employing "exempt" staff, the issue of how to fairly compensate your exempt staff with the benefits of paid time off has surely come up. What is fair? What are my colleagues doing? "I really don't want to reinvent the wheel." So, AAOE decided to poll the experts.

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Improving performance: Show me, don't just tell me
    By Christina Thielst
It is amazing how much you can learn about how processes really work by talking to staff, physicians, patients and others involved in those processes. However, actually observing the workflow and how processes unfold can shine a bright light on what really happens — especially when it comes to patient care. During my career I've had the occasion to ask for a process to be explained and am usually able to identify a few opportunities for improvement with the help of the subject-matter expert offering the description. I've also reached out to others, especially those who have responsibility for processes that intersect with or impact the one being explored.

How people feel about their employer-sponsored health plans
    The New York Times
Society is still waiting to get really good information about how people who have bought health plans on the new state marketplaces are liking them. There's some early polling evidence that people are happy to have coverage — but also some accounts that people are frustrated by small doctor networks and struggling to afford medical care even after getting insurance.

How will healthcare reform impact healthcare spending?
    EHRIntelligence.com
Following the one-time costs of implementing the Affordable Care Act, the health share of the country's gross domestic product is expected to increase at a slower rate than it has historically, although it will still continue to grow. That conclusion is based on projections in a recent Health Affairs article authored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
