During those beginning years, the landscape was one of independent physicians in solo or group practices that went to one or a few hospitals to provide patient care.

    Are You Ready for the HIPAA Omnibus Final Rule Compliance Deadline?

    It has been over 10 years since the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) became such an important part of a practice's daily activities and four years for the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 (HITECH). Sept. 23 marks the compliance date for the HIPAA Omnibus Rule of 2013 which expands the Practices obligations under HIPAA and implements most of the privacy and security provisions of the HITECH Act.

    Providers in New England will need to learn the rules of a new Medicare carrier this fall. National Heritage insurance company (NHIC), the long-standing Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) for most New England states, will transition Medicare parts A and B over to National Government Services (NGS) in October.

Merritt Hawkins, a national healthcare consulting and recruitment firm, shed some light on the situation through the company's annual look at physician recruitment trends. The 2013 review was based on a survey of 3,097 permanent doctor and advanced practitioner job assignments conducted by Merritt Hawkins and two other staffing companies.

    Inefficient revenue cycle technology a headache for physicians

    Inefficient revenue cycle management technology is causing headaches for physicians and their business office managers, finds a new survey. According to the first of eight revenue cycle management studies released by market researcher, Black Book, 72 percent of physician practices, whether in a network, independent or part of a large group or hospital system, expect declining to negative profitability next year because of underutilized or inefficient billing technology.

    While the gender wage gap appears to be disappearing in the general work force, the exact opposite is happening in the health care sector: New research in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that the gender pay gap among doctors, dentists and other healthcare workers has grown over the past decade.

    MGMA physician compensation survey raises questions about performance pay
    The Hospitalist
    Sorting out whether a hospitalist's bonus and other compensation elements are in line with survey data often leads to confusion. The 2013 MGMA Physician Compensation and Production Survey report, based on 2012 data, shows median compensation of $240,352 for internal-medicine hospitalists. So is your compensation in line with survey medians if your base pay is $230,000 and you have a performance bonus of up to $20,000?
