Leveraging Technology to Improve Practice Communication
    AAOE
As our practice has grown, the task of communicating with staff over a larger physical layout has become more challenging. With 14 surgeons and over 15 PA's, we now operate on three floors with four reception areas, and multiple support spaces such as casting and x-ray. Staff assignments, meeting updates and provider changes needed to be communicated in a timely manner to groups distributed throughout our facility. The volume of patients also varies by area based on the mix of providers in clinic each day, and we sought to be able to "flex" support staffing as required by the demand. We have come to rely on two very cost effective solutions to facilitate communication, as well as improve staff and management's "situational awareness" of key clinical support areas.

New FICO credit score formula may hurt medical collections
    By Christina Thielst
A new version of FICO's credit score formula will be launched this fall that could improve the chances of getting a mortgage. But it also has the potential to impact the collections and cash flow of healthcare providers. While this is good news for the mortgage industry and individuals wanting to finance or refinance, there may be some unintended consequences for medical and healthcare providers. Physicians, clinics, hospitals and other care providers may soon find some of their patients reprioritizing the debt they will pay off.

Diagnostic errors are a major factor in medical malpractice claims in the US
    Insurance News Net
If we can better understand why and when medical malpractice occurs, we can focus efforts on reducing the occurrences and the effects of avoidable medical negligence that injure or kill many thousands of people in the United States every year. The Doctors Company, the largest physician-owned medical malpractice insurer in the United States, recently published the findings of its review of 1,877 medical specialty-specific, diagnosis-related closed claims from 2007 to 2013, focusing on alleged diagnosis-related errors and the specific diagnoses that were involved in the claims involving ten medical specialties.

Flex-IT Act aims to reduce meaningful use reporting in 2015
    EHRIntelligence.com
If relief is not coming to eligible professionals and hospitals as a result of a recent final rule modifying meaningful use reporting in 2014 and 2015, then a recently introduced bill might just be the key. Representatives Renee Ellmers, R-N.C., and James Matheson, D-Utah, introduced the Flexibility in Health IT Reporting (Flex-IT) Act of 2014 to Congress with the intent of satisfying widespread calls for the Department of Health & Human Services and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to address full-year reporting requirements for 2015.

    FierceHealthFinance
The growing movement to reveal prices for hospital procedures is just one piece of the healthcare reform puzzle, according to leading experts who spoke at The Economist's Health Care Forum 2014 in Boston. Miller, president and CEO of the Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform in Pittsburgh.
