     AAOE LEADERSHIP

    Managing denials
Cindy Dunn, RN, FACMPE    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As an experienced and knowledgeable healthcare leader, you understand the importance of monitoring every aspect of your practice's accounts receivable. Information regarding patients and payers seems to constantly change, and there is a shift in costs — from employer to employee — that impacts collection efforts. Some days it appears all parties are focused on doing everything they can "not to pay" for services rendered in good faith. The creation of a denials management process remains one of the most overlooked opportunities for revenue increase. More

    Fine-tuning autocorrect to turbocharge efficiency
Debby Reigle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Both Excel and Word have the ability to review what you type against a list of commonly misspelled words and automatically correct these typos. This feature is known as autocorrect. Autocorrect replaces what it perceives as a typing/spelling error with the correction specified in the list. We can tweak this list to eliminate pesky built-in corrections, easily enter symbols or enter long strings of text with just a few keystrokes. More

American Medical News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Many practices are adopting an EHR for the first time, with various surveys finding 70 to 80 percent putting in systems, double the rate of three years ago. Almost every health IT implementation comes with hurdles and blunders. It can be frustrating when blunders affect the patient experience, but many are common and can be prevented by learning from the mistakes of other physicians. More

    Hospitals shift to outpatient care
FierceHealthcare    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hospitals are increasingly turning their focus toward outpatient services. For instance, Illinois' Northwest Community Healthcare is hopping on the trend, opening four new outpatient facilities next year, the Chicago Daily Herald reported. The aim of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was a driving force prompting hospitals to boost outpatient services, Northwest CEO Bruce Crowther said. Health insurers also are taking credit for increased use of outpatient care. More

Massive job losses expected under Medicare sequester
American Medical News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mandatory, across-the-board spending cuts to Medicare in 2013 will lead to large job losses at physician offices and throughout the rest of the healthcare system, according to an analysis on the impact of the scheduled federal budget sequester on the entitlement program. The automatic budget reductions amount to between $10.7 billion and $16.4 billion in annual cuts to Medicare, and will lead to 496,000 jobs being eliminated in 2013 and a loss of 766,000 jobs by 2021, the analysis said. Healthcare law's impact on businesses varies
USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Companies specializing in driving down spending on healthcare, whether through electronic records, preventive care or consolidating services, are turning out to be the biggest winners from the 2010 healthcare law. Investors, analysts and policymakers say any business that can help healthcare providers cut costs or keep patients from being readmitted to the hospital soon after an in-patient visit is attracting more customers and seeing more investment.
