    The Education Council* and the Practice Management Committee** are interested in your feedback regarding future tools for you and your staff. We are considering the development of an online certificate program for staff and practice executives to enhance their skills and knowledge of orthopaedics, based on content from previous AAOE annual conferences. This program might allow you to offer promotions, raises or other forms of motivation to your staff or gain the same for yourself. Before we begin any development of this program, we would sincerely appreciate your feedback.

      Description: Hospital systems are seeking methods to improve service line results while physicians are looking for collaborative ways to expand their practice and more actively be involved in service-line decision-making. This session will provide an overview of a unique and effective physician-hospital alignment method in orthopaedics co-management. Presenters will provide an overview of the structure and present a case study within orthopaedics. Specifics on quality metrics, contract terms and ROI will be presented, concluding with the summary of success factors and when co-management is not the correct alignment model.

    Knee replacements double as aging patients stay active

    Knee replacement surgeries have more than doubled over the past two decades in the U.S. as older Americans strive to stay active later in life, a study found. Total knee replacement procedures rose 162 percent from 1991 to 2010 while the number of procedures to repair a previously implanted artificial knee joint, called revision, jumped 106 percent, according to research released in the Journal of the American Medical Association.     The Food and Drug Administration needs to pay more attention to the information security risks for implantable electronic medical devices such as heart defibrillators and insulin pumps, the General Accountability Office says, including the threat of hacking and sabotage. Although the FDA previously has considered information security risks from unintentional threats in select premarket reviews, the new element highlighted by the GAO report are intentional threats.     There are already tens of thousands of mobile health applications available for download on smartphones and tablets, but it can be hard to know which ones actually deliver on their health claims and provide accurate information. A bill set to be introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives aims to smooth the agency's evaluation process. The Healthcare Innovation and Marketplace Technologies Act would establish a special Office of Mobile Health at the FDA to provide recommendations on mobile health app issues. More
