Connecting the Dots: Using 'Big Data' To Build Efficient, Integrated Musculoskeletal Care
    AAOE
You've heard it before: "Big Data" is transforming healthcare. But "Big Data" is still in its early stages, and few hospitals or health systems have either the time or resources to make sense of the data they already have, let alone craft forward-thinking strategies.

Online Patient Education Content Can Grow Your Business
    AAOE
As a former orthopedic administrator who utilized online marketing to significantly increase patient volume, I am disappointed, but yet not surprised, that practices continue to miss this tremendous opportunity to grow their businesses. Despite the numerous advantages of digital marketing versus old form media, orthopedic practices continue to utilize online channels ineffectively. In fact, basic principles about how a practice website should be structured are still largely misunderstood and not followed. While there are a number of strategies that can and should be utilized (search engine marketing, social networks, retargeted advertising) the most basic tenet that should be followed, but isn't, is simple — provide current and prospective patients with the content they want and need and you will grow your business. Overall, orthopedic practices have an incredible opportunity to create and promote orthopedic patient education material that can help them grow and optimize patient volume.

Litigation, risk to reputation may come from scrutiny of doctors' payment data
    Bloomberg BNA
Open Payments data, which were made public Sept. 30, may have wide-ranging effects on both physicians and drug and device manufacturers that make the payments to doctors, including an increase in qui tam filings, as well as the potential for reputational risks to physicians, attorneys told Bloomberg BNA. Elizabeth B. Carder-Thompson, an attorney with Reed Smith, told Bloomberg BNA that she's concerned the public release of Open Payments data will be mined for qui tam lawsuits under the False Claims Act.

Providers: EHR vendors underwhelm with interoperability
    Healthcare IT News
It may not come as any surprise: Electronic health record vendors don't play well with others. At least that's according to healthcare providers who say, in the lion's share of cases, their EHR is not interoperable with others. So finds a new report put out by health IT research firm KLAS, which underscores a less than ideal reality: In excess of $25 billion in EHR incentives has been paid out to providers and hospitals to subsidize these behemoth EHR systems, which, in most cases, don't talk to each other. In fact, less than half of providers say their EHR vendor is interoperable with other vendors, according to the KLAS data.

For providers who are searching for ways to rescue stalled implementation plans or make up for time lost to the back-and-forth over the latest delay, Erik Newlin, Vice President of EDI Platform & Compliance at Xerox and Co-chair ICD-10 Assessment Workgroup at WEDI, has some simple advice: test with as many business partners as possible in order to ensure a smooth road to 2015.

Provider groups: Extension of MU exemption efforts step in the right direction
    FierceEMR
Provider groups — particularly those representing practice managers and individual doctors — expressed optimism following the decision by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to extend the deadline for meaningful use hardship applications to Nov. 30. The extension applies specifically to eligible providers who aren't able to implement 2014 editions of certified electronic health record technology due to availability issues, as well as those who could not attest via the 2014 CEHRT Flexibility Rule. The latter rule was highly criticized upon publication last month for not changing the reporting period from 365 days to 90 days, and led to some members of Congress proposing legislation calling for the shorter reporting period.

Americans continue to pile up medical debt
    FierceHealthFinance
The typical American is burdened with an ever-increasing medical debt and receives little relief from providers in the way of healthcare price transparency, according to a new study by the consumer counseling firm NerdWallet. American consumers are caught between a financial rock and a hard place when it comes to healthcare services, according to the San Francisco-based NerdWallet. It noted that between 2010 and 2013, Americans' median income dipped $2,300. Yet at the same time, their healthcare expenses rose by more than $1,800.

With another year to transition to ICD-10, health groups' readiness varies
    iHealthBeat
This month was supposed to mark the deadline for U.S. healthcare organizations to transition to ICD-10 to accommodate codes for new diseases and procedures. However, President Obama in April signed legislation that pushed back the ICD-10 compliance date until at least October 2015. CMS then released a final rule establishing Oct. 1, 2015, as the new ICD-10 compliance deadline.

CMS projects faster health spending growth over next decade
    By Christina Thielst
The Office of the Actuary at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recently released new estimates from its analysis of American health spending in the coming decade. After five consecutive years of low growth rates, we can expect health spending rates to increase by 5.6 percent for 2014 and an average of 6 percent in the years 2015-23. Traditionally, healthcare spending tracks with economic growth, but the aging baby boomers and increased insurance coverage from the Affordable Care Act are also expected to contribute to growth, which will result in the health share of GDP rising to nearly one-fifth of the nation's economy by 2023.
