  • MAKING HEADLINES AT AAOE THIS WEEK

    Listserve Summary
    AAOE
Although there were several noteworthy topics discussed on the listserve recently, there is one that stood out to me. The topic was "URGENT! Take Action Now!" Yes, it sounds dramatic, but upon reading the email and content, I was much impressed with the tools available to the AAOE membership. The email encourages the reader to make sure their voice was heard in regards to the "HR 5481 — The Flex-It Act" Upon clicking the link, and assuming the reader is already logged into the AAOE site, their contact info is preloaded with a letter to be sent to the appropriate politician(s) regarding the topic. If the reader does not like the letter or felt differently altogether, the letter is editable. By simply clicking the send button, all the selected politicians were sent the email. There is also an option to mail the letter if preferred.

AAOE members have better tools to be a part of the all the changes in healthcare, they have more of a voice in this era of change. Please check out the AAOE tools on the following link: http://www.congressweb.com/AAOEAdvocacy.

    The Goal of BALANCE
    AAOE
Work/Life balance has been one of the hardest goals for me to achieve. It seems I have been working toward this balance my entire career. With so many challenges in healthcare (or any profession for that matter), we could all work 24/7 and still not complete all of tasks on our plates. Many of us are "type A," and we believe we can do it all—and at the same time. So, how do we reach goal the goal of balance?

    ADVOCACY UPDATE

Teeth Whitening Case Could Affect Scope of Practice
    AAOE
The Supreme Court is set to decide who can whiten teeth in North Carolina and, potentially, who could assist an orthopaedic surgeon in Tennessee or who can treat an ankle injury in Texas. The Court heard arguments on October 2, 2014 in North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners v. Federal Trade Commission and the Justices will now weigh whether the North Carolina state dental board's decisions, in this case who can whiten a patient's teeth in North Carolina, are immune from anti-trust protections that are usually granted to state agencies.

    LEADERSHIP QUOTE OF THE WEEK

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

10 ways to apply social tools for an improved patient experience
    By Christina Thielst
The pressures and drivers to reduce costs, improve quality, emphasize prevention and increase access are making social media and the underlying technologies more attractive to healthcare leaders. They can be effective and efficient tools for the delivery of communications to targeted individuals and/or populations. As a result, those leaders who recognize that we must change the way care is provided are starting to explore new ways of engaging patients across the continuum of care.

To reduce healthcare costs eliminate, don't reform, malpractice system
    The Hill
There is nothing more time consuming and expensive for a patient than undergoing extra tests or procedures during a trip to the emergency room, doctor's office or urgent care center. Often a physician will know exactly what a patient's diagnosis is but will order an x-ray, CT scan, blood work or MRI to reaffirm his clinical judgment. The common rationale is to back up his opinion in case there is a lawsuit.

    Robotic-Assisted Partial Knee Replacement
    Blue Belt Technologies, Inc.
"Partial knee replacements “are unforgiving of even a very subtle amount of misalignment or imbalance,” says Jess Lonner, MD, one of the first surgeons to use the Navio system from Blue Belt Technologies to perform a partial knee replacement. “This device reduces variability, enhances the precision with which we can prepare the bone and dramatically improves the ability to balance soft tissues.”

Why physician practices need to build an ICD-10 bridge
    Physicians News Digest
The ICD-10 mandate may be delayed another year, but providers and EHR vendors shouldn't view the reprieve as an opportunity to relax. Building an ICD-10 bridge should be a top priority at every practice. ICD-10, or International Classification of Diseases, Revision 10, was released by the World Health Organization in 1990. It was intended to replace ICD-9, which was introduced in 1979.

GOP-led Senate would likely change, but not repeal, the ACA
    Medscape
If Republicans gain control of the Senate during this year's midterm elections, they are unlikely to be able to fulfill campaign promises to kill the Affordable Care Act, according to health policy experts. But they will likely pursue changes to the law.

EHR usability cause of key pain points for healthcare CIOs
    EHRIntelligence.com
Whereas EHR adoption continues to increase among healthcare organizations and providers, EHR usability remains a problem for end-users trying to enter and access data efficiently, according to a new Frost & Sullivan survey of healthcare CIOs. EHR users have often complained about the time commitment associated with EHR data entry and its impact on physician-patient interaction, but they appear to be encountering difficulties finding information in the EHR as well.

What are the top financial concerns for physicians?
    By Dorothy L. Tengler
Practicing medicine continues to be complex and challenging — often to the detriment of physicians' personal financial matters. In fact, 50 percent of physicians believe their profession has more complicated financial needs than other professions for a variety of reasons, including a late career start and concerns about malpractice and liability. AMA Insurance's 2014 Report on U.S. Physicians' Financial Preparedness surveyed more than 1,000 employed physicians and tracked key personal financial areas and employee retirement savings.

Computer-assisted coding market 'ripe' for growth as ICD-10 looms
    FierceHealthIT
As hospitals prepare to transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 coding by October 2015, computer-assisted coding tools will become increasingly important, so much so that, according to a new HIMSS Analytics report, they have the highest growth potential out of 25 support service applications. For the report, the fall 2014 edition of the Essentials of the U.S. Hospital IT Market, researchers combed through the HIMSS Analytics database to measure the use of support service tools against anticipated sales.
