  • MAKING HEADLINES AT AAOE THIS WEEK

Member to Member: ICD-10 Webinar Series — Part 1 Overview
    AAOE
    Part 1- ICD-10 CM Introduction
John Burns, CPC, CPMA, CPC-1, CEMC
ICD-10 Ambassador & AHIMA Approved Trainer

Mr. Burns began his webinar with a humorous and robust history of the ICD-10 implementation challenges in America. The International Classification of Diseases is owned and maintained by the World Health Organization and ICD is used around the world. In fact, the US & Italy are the last two countries to adopt ICD-10. He explained that the major challenge for physicians and coders will come from translating ICD-9 CM codes into ICD-10 CM unless they begin to understand the underlying concepts of the importance of documentation of the condition with respect to approach, laterality, and type of encounter.

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Study: Medical malpractice claim frequency, costs stabilizing
    Business Insurance
Medical malpractice claim frequency is expected to remain flat in the next year, while the cost of med mal claims has seen the smallest increase in more than a decade, according to a joint study by Aon Risk Solutions and the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management. The study, released during ASHRM's annual conference in Austin, Texas, projected no increase in hospital professional liability claim frequency for 2014. Meanwhile, med mal claim severity, including defense costs, is growing by 2.5 percent annually, which is the lowest rate of severity growth in the report's 14-year history.

Medicare docs face 24 percent pay cut ... again
    CNNMoney
Medicare doctors have been threatened with pay cuts practically every year over the past decade. This year is no different. Come Jan. 1, Medicare physician reimbursements are slated to be slashed by 24.4 percent. And that would be on top of this year's 2 percent reduction forced by across-the-board budget cuts.

Obama takes 'full responsibility' for fixing HealthCare.gov
    CNN
President Barack Obama acknowledged Wednesday the national health care law's new website was "too slow" and too many people "have gotten stuck" in it. "I'm not happy about it and neither are a lot of Americans who need health care," he said at a Boston rally to tout and defend the Affordable Care Act, which is the signature domestic achievement of his presidency. The President talked about the miserable start up of HealthCare.Gov, which went online October 1.

Make physicians full partners in accountable care organizations
    Harvard Business Review
The Affordable Care Act encourages the formation of accountable care organizations that can accept bundled payments for hospitalization and outpatient care. Most ACOs use an organizational structure, the foundation model, which has a serious shortcoming: It limits the extent to which an ACO's practicing physicians must commit themselves to the goals of performance improvement and cost containment.

Why 'rate shock' is an essential part of healthcare reform
    Business Insider
Once Obamacare is implemented, America's health insurance system will be a thicket of subsidies and transfers that benefit some people and harm others. Critics of the law have seized on this observation, noting the existence of "rate shock": some people (especially young and healthy ones with moderate and high incomes who buy insurance in the individual market) will pay more than they used to, so others can pay less.

Notices canceling health insurance leave many on edge
    NPR
President Obama repeated this line or a variation of it many times during the campaign to pass his landmark health care bill: "If you like your healthcare plan, you'll be able to keep your healthcare plan, period." But while that might be true for people who get health insurance through their employer, it's not true for many people who buy their policies in the individual market — about five percent of the nation's policyholders.

Mistakes to avoid when acquiring physician practices: Costs and expectations

These insights are derived from extensive work with executives of the acquirer (commonly, integrated practices of hospital systems), practice administrators, inside and outside counsel, and other consultants. Here are the first five "mistakes to avoid."

From uninsured to covered: PAs at the forefront of the ACA
    By Maria Frisch
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was first signed into law on March 23, 2010, and has remained on course for full implementation in January 2014. It has been contended that this law will fundamentally change nearly every aspect of healthcare, from insurance to the final delivery of care. The largest and most important provision of the act is the so-called "individual mandate," which will effectively require all Americans to purchase health insurance by taxing those who do not do so by the 2014 deadline. What does all of this mean for physician assistants?
