  • MAKING HEADLINES AT AAOE THIS WEEK

    Bundled Strength
    Provided by AAOE
An old man at the point of death summoned his sons around him to give them some parting advice. He requested a bundle of sticks and said to his eldest son, "Break it." The son strained and strained, but in spite of all his efforts was unable to break the bundle. The other sons also tried, but none of them was successful.

Each of us has witnessed patients whose lives have been changed by orthopaedics, and we know this is the specialty of second chances. A Nation in Motion® is a campaign that illustrates the value of orthopaedic care, and the Second First video is a powerful anthem for potential and future orthopaedic patients.

    ADVOCACY UPDATE

    AAOE Advocacy Effort Successful!
    Provided by AAOE
Just in case you missed this in our November Advocacy Update we wanted to let you know that through our combined efforts, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will not be finalizing, for now, a proposed rule requiring those who fit custom fitted orthotics to have specialized training. The proposed rule (Docket #: CMS-1614-F) would have only allowed physicians, treating practitioners, occupational therapists, and physical therapists to fit custom fitted orthotics. Orthotics fitted by any other practice employee would have been considered "off the shelf."

    LEADERSHIP QUOTE OF THE WEEK

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

Research: American doctors are 'drowning in paperwork'
    By Scott E. Rupp
According to a new study, U.S. doctors spend nearly 17 percent of their working lives on nonpatient-related paperwork — time that might otherwise be spent caring for patients. The findings also suggest that the more time doctors spend on such tasks, the unhappier they are about having chosen medicine as a career. This research parallels that of another recent study, which suggests that U.S. patients may face growing challenges accessing care if shifting patterns in medical practice configurations and physician workforce trends continue.

Mixed results for 2014 healthcare ballot measures
    Healthcare Finance News
The Affordable Care Act wasn't directly on the ballot in any state, but voters did decide a host of health-related issues in the 2014 mid-term elections. And there was no clear theme to what won and lost. For example, voters in two states — North Dakota and Colorado — rejected so-called "personhood" amendments that would have recognized rights for unborn fetuses.

Is meaningful use in need of a makeover?
    Government Health IT
How do you tweak a federal program into which tens of billions of dollars have already been poured? The question is akin to asking if a screwdriver might be all that's needed to get a stranded cruise ship back on course, but, nonetheless, it's the question many health IT stakeholders have been asking about meaningful use, and the HITECH Act in general.

OA Braces: Did increased utilization contribute to billing code changes?
    Townsend Design
A growing percentage of Medicare patients with OA related knee pain and mobility limitations are being fit with off-the-shelf corrective knee braces. Following this increase in use, CMS has imposed new billing code requirements effective October 1, 2014. Statistics from 2012 indicate Medicare provided reimbursement for over 20,500 L1843 single hinge braces routinely prescribed for unicompartment OA. An additional 19,000 L1845 braces were reimbursed by Medicare. While these dual hinge (L1845) braces are prescribed for both ligament instabilities and knee OA, a majority of the L1845 braces paid for by Medicare are prescribed for older OA patients with joint degeneration.

What's the big deal about motivation?
    By Anne Rose
Thousands of books have been written about motivation. It's a popular subject for seminar presenters, talk-show hosts and magazine columnists. Researchers study and publish scholarly articles on the subject. So what's the big deal? Why does the subject of motivation merit this amount of attention? Because it's crucial to a successful organization. Motivation spurs your staff to action. It inspires them to perform above minimum expectations. But what is the best way to achieve it?

California voters decline to raise medical malpractice cap
    The Wall Street Journal
Californians overwhelmingly voted down Proposition 46, an initiative that would have raised a cap on medical malpractice awards and required routine drug and alcohol testing for hospital doctors. The no votes outnumbered yes votes by a 2-to-1 margin. The high-spending battle over Prop. 46 pitted two special-interest groups in the state against each other: doctors and trial lawyers.

ONC finds consumers distrust EHRs enough to withhold information
    Government Health IT
American consumers have deep enough concerns about the privacy and security of electronic medical records that some even withheld information from care providers. Perhaps even more telling: That’s according to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT.

ICD-10 improvement for physicians requires fast, simple tools
    EHRIntelligence.com
Clinical documentation improvement for ICD-10 is one of the perpetual pain points tormenting healthcare organizations in the lead-up to Oct. 1, 2015. Overworked physicians are frustrated by the sheer scope of changes that they are being asked to make to their workflows and technologies, and since ICD-10 has been delayed so many times in the past, it's difficult to get providers to register a sense of urgency when it comes to the new codes.

The next-generation EHR: Specialized and speedy
    mHealthNews
mHealth and EHRs are intersecting in creative ways, as evidenced by an Atlanta company's new iPad-enabled platform for the home health and hospice market. Brightree recently unveiled the EHR point-of-care app, calling it the first "native iOS app" for home health and hospice agencies. Specialty-specific platforms are a hot commodity, and many are being developed as mobile tools to target clinicians outside the traditional hospital setting. In fact, companies like Practice Fusion and Kareo are making a name for themselves in the post-acute care environment with platforms that can be easily accessed on mobile devices.
