    What's in Your Brand?
    AAOE
Until recent years, many medical practices did not feel they needed to market their practice. After all, marketing is for large corporations and those greedy for-profit companies, right? Changes in healthcare have driven medical practices — those who provide health and wellness to patients — to think hard about jumping into the marketing "pool." What caused the change? In my opinion, it comes down to the economics of healthcare as it relates to the internet. The internet provides a wealth of resources and information for patients seeking a new primary care doctor or a specialist. Some of these sites include:
    • WebMD
    • Vitals
    • Healthgrades
    • ZocDoc
    • Doctor Directory
    • iTriage

    Lame-Duck Session Begins
    AAOE
The lame-duck session of the 113th Congress began today with lawmakers returning to their offices after a month and a half of campaigning. For a handful of Democrats, this will be their last session of Congress unless they successfully challenge an incumbent in a future election.

Report shows in-house physician recruitment professionals are stretched thin
    Healthcare Finance News
The Association of Staff Physician Recruiters recently conducted a survey to gather data about the structure of in-house recruitment departments. A total of 240 in-house physician recruitment professionals employed by hospitals, universities and multi-specialty groups participated in the survey. The 2014 In-House Physician Recruitment Processes Report summarizes the results of the survey and looks at the structure of recruitment departments and how they handle the entire recruitment process.

Obama administration predicts significantly lower health-care enrollment
    The Washington Post
The Obama administration predicted that the number of people with health coverage through the Affordable Care Act's insurance marketplaces will be significantly lower by the end of next year than previous government estimates. Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Mathews Burwell announced that, by the end of 2015, 9 million to 9.9 million Americans probably will be in health plans sold through the federal and state insurance exchanges created under the healthcare law.

OA Braces: Did increased utilization contribute to billing code changes?
    Townsend Design
A growing percentage of Medicare patients with OA related knee pain and mobility limitations are being fit with off-the-shelf corrective knee braces. Following this increase in use, CMS has imposed new billing code requirements effective October 1, 2014. Statistics from 2012 indicate Medicare provided reimbursement for over 20,500 L1843 single hinge braces routinely prescribed for unicompartment OA. An additional 19,000 L1845 braces were reimbursed by Medicare. While these dual hinge (L1845) braces are prescribed for both ligament instabilities and knee OA, a majority of the L1845 braces paid for by Medicare are prescribed for older OA patients with joint degeneration.

C-suite starting to see telemedicine's value
    Government Health IT
As providers move away from fee-for-service model to value-based care, executives are recognizing that Affordable Care Act penalties for readmissions and hospital-acquired conditions mean that remote care may soon become profitable, according to a new survey. Nine out of 10 providers are moving forward with telemedicine projects, the report from Foley & Lardner LLP found.

    Medical malpractice reform
    MedPage Today
After years of turmoil and conflict, the medical malpractice climate has been relatively stable in recent years. Rates of paid claims against physicians have decreased since the early 2000s, and malpractice insurance premiums have been flat or declining. Many states have passed tort-reform laws, which may include limits on damages, but tort reform on the federal level has never advanced. The authors of a new analysis suggest that, in the absence of highly aggravated tensions around malpractice issues, the moment may be propitious for productive reforms and experiments.

Physicians say Obamacare contracts squeeze pay
    Insurance News Net
In the new Affordable Care Act world of healthcare, contracts between physicians and insurers and hospitals have changed greatly. And not everyone is happy about it. In short, one of the ACA's attempts to insure more people created health insurance marketplaces offering federal subsidies for private plans that now compete with unsubsidized plans insurers offer outside the marketplaces.

Do delays in ICD-10 implementation teach the wrong lesson?
    EHR Intelligence
The healthcare industry has less than a year to complete its ICD-10 implementation efforts to be compliant by Oct. 1, 2015, but that additional time means nothing if providers continue working with the wrong kind of EHR, practice management, and health IT vendors. That is the opinion of James Libecco, M.D., a single practitioner at Akron Skin Center in Ohio.
