To Budget or Not to Budget, that is the Question
Written by Jim P. Kidd, CMPE
During my career, I have spoken with many associates on this topic, and at this time of year, it weighs heavily on the minds of many corporations, businesses and medical practices. Some of my most respected colleagues in medical practice administration do not complete an annual budget, while others do so regularly. What's the difference? Why do some successful practices "crunch the numbers," while others, just as successful, do not?

    AAOE Membership Council Update
Written by Jeff Smith, CPA, MBA, Membership Council Member-at-Large
AAOE’s Membership Council met together at the AAOE Annual Conference in Washington DC. As always, we search for ways to cultivate relationships and find new members for the organization as the main focus. In looking at recognized benchmarking statistics on organizational membership, AAOE fares very well with the national average. Nationally, a 76% retention rate is what organizations average, while AAOE retention rate is at 82%. With benefits like the excellent national conference that was just held in Washington DC, it is noticeable that members are getting real quality for their membership dollar.

    AAOE Membership Benefit: eNews
    Written by William Pupkis
Since I joined, thirty years ago, there has been significant growth in this organization. Today there are several benefits available to our membership that none of us would have imagined back when. We might debate which are the most beneficial, but one that I like very much is the "eNews." It is what many call a state-of-the-art multi-media digital newsletter.

Ebola, Influenza and Infection Control: A Doctor's Perspective
    Written by Chad Schiffman
It is no so secret that Ebola has been a hot topic in the news for the past few months. Some stories about Ebola say the risks are real, while others say we shouldn't fear. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new guidance for U.S. healthcare workers on personal protective equipment for Ebola. Would that suggest the risks of Ebola are very real?

Knee OA: Successfully Bracing Disproportional Legs
    Townsend Design
It's not easy to fit a standard size rigid OA knee brace on an abnormally shaped leg. Large thigh, small calf. Extra wide knee on a skinny leg. Disproportional legs are often the norm, especially with older or obese patients with OA related knee pain that reduces mobility and quality of life. While custom knee braces can be ordered, they are tougher to get authorized and reimbursed. The patient also has a more substantial co-payment because custom braces cost more to fabricate. So the majority of OA braces being fit in physician clinics are OTS (off-the-shelf) in standard sizes -- generally ranging from XS to 2XL.

New EHR vendors and technology needed for continued innovation
    By Scott E. Rupp
In the span of the last five years, use and implementation of electronic health records in the U.S. has dramatically accelerated because of federal mandates and financial incentives directly related to the meaningful use program. Because of these efforts, as well as time and resources invested by healthcare providers, electronic health records are more popular than at any point in the past and are now "the heart of health IT," according to research firm Frost & Sullivan.

When encryption is not enough for HIPAA
    Government Health IT
General consensus about HIPAA has thus far been that if healthcare organizations simply encrypt their data and devices then lost or stolen smartphones or tablets are essentially protected. But reality is not always so simple as a get-out-of-jail-free card.

HIT impedes physicians' ability to see more patients as insurance coverage grows
    FierceHealthIT
Physicians are equating the use of health IT with reduced capacity to see more patients just as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is providing coverage for more Americans, a new survey finds. As the number of health information technologies grew, physicians anticipated being significantly less likely to be able to accept new patients, according to the survey of Michigan primary care physicians, which was published in the American Journal of Managed Care.
