OA Braces: Did increased utilization contribute to billing code changes?
    Townsend Design
A growing percentage of Medicare patients with OA related knee pain and mobility limitations are being fit with off-the-shelf corrective knee braces. Following this increase in use, CMS has imposed new billing code requirements effective October 1, 2014. Statistics from 2012 indicate Medicare provided reimbursement for over 20,500 L1843 single hinge braces routinely prescribed for unicompartment OA. An additional 19,000 L1845 braces were reimbursed by Medicare. While these dual hinge (L1845) braces are prescribed for both ligament instabilities and knee OA, a majority of the L1845 braces paid for by Medicare are prescribed for older OA patients with joint degeneration.

    WITHIN YOUR PRACTICE WALLS

The long road to health information exchange
    By Christina Thielst
Health information exchange is turning out to be one of those really long journeys in which you hear the kids in the back seat asking, "Are we there yet?" while the driver keeps saying, "Almost." The Office of the National Coordinator is focusing on the next 10 years with its soon-to-be-released road map to reach interoperability. As we await the March 2015 release, it is a good time to reflect on the 10 years since I pulled onto the HIE highway and share a few thoughts on the future.

Setting physician pay after a merger
    Healthcare Finance News
The M&A activity for physician practices shows no sign of slowing down. In 2013, around half of all healthcare facilities in the United States planned to acquire at least one practice in their community, according to research by Jackson Healthcare. For healthcare financial executives, the integration of a new operation carries many challenges. And not the least is the question of how to compensate physicians who are joining the organization. This has to be addressed not only with the interests of the doctors and the hospital in mind, but also in compliance with legal requirements.

Why physician compensation is flat for some doctors
    Healthcare Dive
The demand for docs, especially in primary care and internal medicine, is at an all-time high, in part thanks to the Affordable Care Act's push to get people out of the ER and into medical practice waiting rooms. Yet as the industry shifts toward value-based care models, physician compensation for primary care isn't budging much. And what’s more, it won't be budging anytime soon.

Experts: No easy options if court strikes down ACA
    USA Today
Exactly what would happen to the Affordable Care Act if the Supreme Court invalidates tax credits in the three dozen states where the federal government runs the program? Legal scholars say a decision like that would deal a potentially lethal blow to the law because it would undermine the government-run insurance marketplaces that are its backbone, as well as the mandate requiring most Americans to carry coverage.

In search of a 'safe harbor'
    MedPage Today
At the dead center of the healthcare reform debate is the tension between saving lives and saving money. The reformers say that American healthcare costs too much and one of the ways to cut costs is to pay providers less. Providers warn that such cuts incentivize them to see more patients in a shorter amount of time, relying more and more on lab testing. Thus, these kinds of cuts could actually end up costing the system more in the long run. Providers are also incentivized to overtest because doing otherwise can expose them to potentially devastating litigation.
