Boating Industry
Share

BoatOnCourse.com, a new on-the-water navigation rules website, provides boaters with tools designed to help them become more aware of on-the-water navigation rules and enjoy a safer time on the water. The website's approach is to relate the "rules of the road," and apply them to teach boating safety. In addition to providing boaters with a basic awareness resource, the website provides links to organizations that offer boating safety courses in the boater's area.

There is something that every boat owner can be doing during the down time between winterizing your boat and getting ready for the upcoming season. Think Boating Safety! There is no time like the present to examine the past boating season, and plan for the next. Review a list of removable or portable safety equipment. While not all inclusive, it should cover the majority of the equipment you have, whether federally or state mandated or just common sense items.

Hybrid engines aren't just for cars anymore. Hybrid engine systems are slowly catching on with environmentally conscious sailors, replacing less-fuel efficient diesel motors on sailboats. The setup — a diesel generator paired with an electric motor — allows sailors to stay out on the water longer, bypassing the need to return to the dock each night to recharge. And it burns less fuel than a diesel motor by itself, pumping out a fraction of the pollution.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources' Division of Watercraft advises boaters to take precautions to reduce the effects of cold-water immersion should people unexpectedly fall into the icy cold water. The risks associated with a cold-water immersion for unprepared people can result in death if a boat capsizes or a person falls overboard. Properly loading a boat and not overloading it with people and gear is an important first step to reduce the chances of a boat capsizing.

The downside is they are also very dangerous if proper care is not taken and/or if an inexperienced person is operating a PWC.

Permits could be required for large gatherings of boats in Maryland
Southern Maryland Online
Share

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources wants to require large gatherings of boats to obtain permits because of the strain on police caused by large lake events. The department said officers are especially important at these events because of the number of boats present and the dangerous situations that individuals often put themselves into because they've been drinking. A new bill in the Maryland General Assembly would make it mandatory for these marine gatherings to obtain a permit.
