Indiana House Panel Advances Right-to-Work Bill

A panel of Indiana lawmakers voted along party lines to move divisive right-to-work legislation to the full House of Representatives. The House Employment, Labor and Pensions Committee voted 8-5 to advance a ban on employment contracts that require workers to pay union fees. The panel's Republican chairman, Douglas Gutwein of Francesville, did not accept any changes to the measure.

Federal officials have withdrawn two serious safety citations against a Mississippi industrial painting contractor with a model safety record, saying the inspections that led to them should not have been allowed. The contractor, however, says the citations themselves were unfounded from the start and wants to dispel any notion that they were dropped on a technicality.

Nonresidential Construction Spending Increases 0.9 Percent in November

Total nonresidential construction spending increased 0.9 percent in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $555.7 billion, according to the Jan. 3 report by the U.S. Commerce Department. However, total nonresidential spending is down 0.1 percent from one year ago. Private nonresidential construction spending was unchanged for the month, but is 4.5 percent higher than November 2010.
