Controversial Medicare recovery audits make limited return
Modern Healthcare (Subscription required)
The CMS is restarting audits of Medicare fee-for-service claims on a limited basis. The program has been dormant since June 1 when current audit contracts expired. Lauren Aronson, director of CMS' Office of Legislation, sent an email to congressional staffers recently announcing the resumption of the recovery audit contractor program.

ACMA will return to Washington, D.C., Sept. 30-Oct. 2 for its annual Advocacy on Capitol Hill event. ACMA members will meet with key lawmakers to advocate on behalf of case management and discuss the issues impacting our practice and adversely affecting patient care.

ACMA is working to ensure case management has a seat at the table when decisions are being made and legislation and regulations are developed that will impact your daily practice. Lumbar fusion procedures and RAC audits: What you need to know
Lumbar fusion procedures are the latest to come under scrutiny from Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) audits. Currently audits of lumbar fusion procedures are occurring in two of the four federally designated regions, each served by a different RAC contractor. The RAC process will likely have an effect on the documentation requirements and reimbursement for lumbar fusion procedures

PCORI announces $90 million to study treatment alternatives
AHA News Now
The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute announced up to $90 million in funding to study practical comparative questions faced by patients, clinicians and other healthcare decision makers. Any research organization, including university/college hospital and healthcare systems, may submit a letter of intent to apply for up to $10 million in funding to support large clinical or observational studies that compare alternatives to prevent, diagnosis, treat or manage a disease or symptom; improve health care system-level approaches to managing care; or eliminate health or health care disparities.
